Anthropic
Tax Director, Provision & Compliance
Job Description
ABOUT THE ROLE
Anthropic is building reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems that are safe and beneficial for users and society. As a rapidly expanding technology leader, we need a Tax Director who can own the global income tax provision and U.S. compliance functions while guiding the tax strategy for our high‑growth, capital‑intensive operations. The role is a core operational leadership position that drives the quarterly and annual ASC 740 close, manages a co‑sourced compliance program, and builds scalable processes, controls, and a high‑performance tax team. Your expertise will shape how we allocate capital for compute and data‑center infrastructure, execute complex M&A and joint‑venture transactions, and navigate evolving tax regulations in a fast‑moving industry.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
You will lead the end‑to‑end worldwide income tax provision, including current and deferred calculations, effective tax rate reconciliation, valuation allowance assessments, stock‑based compensation, and uncertain tax positions. You will own the tax journal entries, reconciliations, footnote disclosures, and SOX controls, and manage the audit relationship with our Big 4 auditors. You will coordinate international provision components with internal and external advisors, driving continuous improvement in close speed and quality. You will oversee the U.S. federal and state income tax compliance program, working with co‑sourced Big 4 providers on returns, estimated payments, elections, and the compliance calendar. You will forecast cash tax, support tax authority notices and audit defense, and champion automation and AI tooling across provision and compliance workflows. You will prepare and review technical memos for auditors and leadership, model cash tax and effective tax rate impacts of proposed structures for Corp Dev, Finance, and Legal, and manage outside advisor budgets and relationships. You will mentor and develop tax team members, building the function as the company scales.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
You will have substantial experience managing a corporate tax function in a multinational software or technology company, with hands‑on ownership of the full ASC 740 provision cycle, deferred taxes, valuation allowance judgments, uncertain tax positions, footnotes, SOX controls, and auditor management. You will have managed a U.S. federal and state compliance program at scale, including co‑sourced arrangements with Big 4 providers. You will bring deep familiarity with complex M&A transactions, including tax purchase price allocations, ASC 805 opening balance sheet accounting, diligence, and structuring, as well as infrastructure leases, build‑outs, and financing structures. You will hold a CPA and ideally have a Master’s in Taxation or an LLM. You will write clear technical memos that satisfy Big 4 auditors and explain complex issues in plain language to non‑tax partners. You will thrive on novel fact patterns and ambiguity, defaulting to building the workpaper and documenting the position rather than waiting for a template.
