Staff Software Engineer, Enterprise Apps

ABOUT THE ROLE Coinbase is on a mission to increase economic freedom, and the Staff Software Engineer in Enterprise Applications and Architecture will play a pivotal role in that mission. In this remote‑first position you will design and build the customer experience platforms that power customer service and compliance workflows for agents across the company. You will own end‑to‑end delivery of distributed backend services, set technical direction, and mentor a high‑performing engineering team to deliver reliable, scalable solutions that directly improve customer satisfaction and compliance outcomes at scale. WHAT YOU'LL DO You will architect and deliver distributed backend systems and foundational infrastructure components, leveraging Go, gRPC, TypeScript, and React. You will lead the technical roadmap for the team, translating ambiguous problems into clear architectural plans with measurable outcomes. You will build and scale high‑reliability services that streamline CX agent workflows and compliance processes, owning the full lifecycle from design through production deployment. You will mentor engineers on design techniques, coding standards, testing practices, and operational best practices, raising the overall engineering quality bar across the team. You will partner cross‑functionally with teams across multiple time zones to identify platform improvements, foresee potential issues, and communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non‑technical leaders. WHAT YOU'LL NEED You bring at least eight years of software engineering experience, with a proven track record of architecting and delivering distributed systems that solve high‑impact problems. You are deeply proficient in Go and have built scalable, high‑traffic backend services in production, including API development with gRPC or GraphQL, event‑driven architectures with Kafka or other message queues, and both SQL and NoSQL databases. You have hands‑on experience with cloud infrastructure and DevOps tooling such as AWS, Kubernetes, Terraform, and CI/CD pipelines, and you understand how to implement rate limiters, caching, load balancing, circuit breakers, and observability. You have led technical projects end‑to‑end, mentored engineers, and influenced architectural decisions across teams without direct authority. You responsibly utilize generative AI, maintaining human oversight to deliver business‑ready outputs that improve workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.
