Senior Software Engineer, Marketing Platform Tooling
Job Description
ABOUT THE ROLE
We are seeking a highly skilled Senior Software Engineer to join our Marketing Platform Tooling team at Instacart. As a key member of this team, you will play a critical role in building and maintaining the core backend systems that power Instacart's marketing capabilities. This is a unique opportunity to work on production-scale platforms, including the Targeting Platform (TaaS) and CRM Messaging Service (CRMS), and contribute to the development of the Unified Marketing Backend (UMB).
WHAT YOU'LL DO
As a Senior Software Engineer on this team, you will be responsible for architecting, building, and maintaining high-quality backend systems for TaaS and CRMS. You will also play a central role in designing and building the UMB, a composable platform that will serve as the shared foundation for all of Instacart's marketing infrastructure. Your responsibilities will include:
- Architecting and building scalable, reliable distributed systems, including working with relational and NoSQL databases and data pipelines
- Designing and implementing real-time targeting, campaign health and observability, API and eventing integrations, and CRM white-label expansion
- Collaborating extensively across backend and full-stack engineering, Product, Design, and adjacent platform teams
- Contributing to building a sustainable on-call rotation as the team scales
- Balancing ongoing platform stability work with a growing H2 roadmap and helping reduce execution risk on two of Instacart's most critical systems
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- 5+ years of backend software development experience with a proven track record of delivering production systems at scale
- Proficiency in Ruby or Python, with experience with Go a plus
- Hands-on experience with Rails or Pandas in a production environment
- Experience designing and building scalable, reliable distributed systems
- Demonstrated ability to write rigorous unit tests and work through complex technical problems independently
- Strong communication skills with experience collaborating across engineering, product, and cross-functional teams
- Bachelor's or Master's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience

We believe that our employees should have the freedom to choose where they do their best work, whether that's from home, an office, or a coffee shop.
