Job Description

ABOUT THE ROLE Instacart is a leading grocery delivery company that aims to make food accessible to everyone. We're looking for a Senior Software Engineer to join our Growth Lifecycle Incentives team, which builds coupon experiences that drive revenue for the company. As a key member of this team, you'll design and build backend services and user-facing experiences that power coupon merchandising. WHAT YOU'LL DO You'll be responsible for designing, building, and owning backend services, APIs, and data integrations that power coupon merchandising. This will involve implementing and iterating on experiments end-to-end, partnering with Product and Data Science to ideate, launch, measure, and refine A/B tests that move key metrics. You'll also identify and execute codebase and product optimizations that improve reliability, performance, and cost efficiency across distributed systems. Additionally, you'll collaborate cross-functionally to define roadmaps, success metrics, and guardrails; communicate tradeoffs clearly in a fast-paced, experiment-driven environment. You'll uphold high engineering standards through code reviews, testing, documentation, and thoughtful architecture decisions that balance speed with quality. You'll also partner with frontend and mobile engineers to deliver cohesive, high-quality experiences across web, iOS, and Android. WHAT YOU'LL NEED To be successful in this role, you'll need 4+ years of professional software engineering experience with a focus on backend development. You should be proficient in at least one modern backend language and framework, such as Go, Python/Django or Flask/FastAPI, Java/Spring, Ruby/Rails, or Node.js/Express. You should also have hands-on experience designing and operating RESTful or gRPC APIs and microservices in production. You should have a strong working knowledge of relational databases (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL) and caching/NoSQL stores (e.g., Redis, DynamoDB); ability to write and optimize SQL. Experience collaborating with Product and Data Science to build data-informed features and iterate based on experiment results is also essential. You should also have experience deploying and operating services on a public cloud (e.g., AWS, GCP) and working with containers (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) or similar orchestration. WHY REMOTE Instacart is a Flex First team, which means we offer flexible work arrangements that allow you to choose where you do your best work. You'll have the opportunity to work from home, an office, or your favorite coffee shop, while staying connected and building community through regular in-person events. BENEFITS Instacart provides highly market-competitive compensation and benefits in each location where our employees work. This role is remote, and the base pay range for a successful candidate is dependent on their permanent work location. We offer a range of benefits, including health insurance, parental leave, education stipend, life insurance, and equipment stipend.
