ABOUT THE ROLE GitLab is the intelligent orchestration platform that powers DevSecOps for more than 50 million users, including half of the Fortune 100. As a Senior Backend Engineer based in Poland, you will shape the architecture of a global platform that millions of developers rely on to ship secure, high‑quality software faster. Your work will influence the technical direction of cross‑functional teams, drive the evolution of backend systems, and help define standards that keep our platform reliable, performant, and secure at scale. WHAT YOU'LL DO You will design and ship complex backend features with minimal guidance, choosing between modular‑monolith, shared components, or independently operated services to meet product goals. You will advocate for product quality, security, availability, and performance, establishing backend standards for code style, testing, APIs, and operational readiness. You will mentor junior engineers, remove technical blockers, and improve delivery practices through thoughtful code and design reviews. You will diagnose and prevent performance or reliability issues at scale, participate in incident response, and act as a technical owner when necessary. You will integrate agentic AI into production engineering workflows, evaluating its effectiveness and coaching others on responsible, high‑judgment use. You will collaborate closely with product managers and designers to shape requirements, ensuring every technical decision delivers genuine value to users. WHAT YOU'LL NEED You have deep backend expertise, a strong command of architecture, APIs, data systems, and performance tuning in a complex product environment. You are proficient in modern backend languages and systems programming, valuing the ability to learn and adapt over mastery of a single language. You possess architectural judgment, having designed or evolved modular backend boundaries, bounded contexts, and migration‑safe architectures. You can lead through influence, technical judgment, and clear written communication, bridging product needs and technical reality. You have proven experience building or operating agentic systems in production, moving beyond prompt engineering to architect loops, tool‑use, and error‑handling strategies that ensure reliability at scale. You bring experience with high‑throughput distributed systems, concurrency, profiling, containerized production operations such as Kubernetes, deep database performance knowledge with PostgreSQL or ClickHouse, and a background in large‑scale modular monoliths or event‑driven systems. Public technical communication, open‑source maintenance, or developer‑focused SaaS experience is a plus.
