Legal Services NYC
Hotline Paralegal
Job Description
ABOUT THE ROLE
Legal Services NYC is a leading civil legal services provider dedicated to fighting poverty and advancing racial, social, and economic justice for low‑income New Yorkers. As the largest organization of its kind in the country, LSNYC serves hundreds of thousands of clients annually through a network of neighborhood offices, outreach sites, and partnerships with community organizations and public agencies. The Access Line is the first point of contact for individuals seeking legal help, and the Hotline Paralegal plays a pivotal role in connecting clients to the resources they need. This fully remote position offers the opportunity to work at the forefront of social justice, collaborate with attorneys across multiple practice areas, and contribute directly to the well‑being of New Yorkers.
WHAT YOU’LL DO
You will answer inbound calls, conduct eligibility screenings, and document client information in our case management system. You will draft concise case notes, schedule appointments, and send appointment letters and follow‑up communications. Under attorney supervision, you will provide preliminary legal advice and referrals to appropriate services. You will manage a high volume of inquiries, prioritizing tasks while maintaining accuracy and confidentiality. You will also support off‑site intake during evenings and weekends as needed, ensuring continuous access for clients in crisis. Your work will directly influence the quality of services LSNYC delivers and the lives of the communities we serve.
WHAT YOU’LL NEED
You have proven experience as a paralegal or intake specialist in a fast‑paced, client‑facing environment. Your written and verbal communication skills are exemplary, with a demonstrated ability to interview clients with empathy, listen actively, and distill complex information quickly. You are highly organized, able to juggle multiple priorities, and meticulous in following written and oral instructions. Proficiency with case‑management software, Microsoft Office, and email is required, and you are comfortable learning new systems. You thrive under pressure, maintain high quality standards, and possess a genuine passion for social justice and community service. A background in civil legal services or experience working with low‑income populations is highly valued.
WHY REMOTE
LSNYC’s distributed, asynchronous culture empowers employees to work from anywhere while maintaining a collaborative, supportive environment. Flexible scheduling allows you to balance personal commitments with the demands of a high‑volume intake line, and our remote infrastructure ensures you have the tools and resources needed to perform at your best. By working remotely, you help expand LSNYC’s reach, ensuring that low‑income New Yorkers across all five boroughs can access legal assistance regardless of geographic barriers.
