Monzo
Director of Data, Payments
Job Description
ABOUT THE ROLE
Monzo is redefining banking for a new generation, and the Payments team is at the heart of that transformation. As Director of Data, Payments you will lead the data strategy that powers the seamless, secure, and scalable payment experiences our customers rely on every day. You will work closely with product, engineering, design, and risk teams to shape a global payments platform that delivers the same simplicity and transparency that has defined Monzo’s brand. Your influence will extend beyond the Payments squad, driving data‑driven decision making across the organisation and helping Monzo expand into new markets while maintaining a unified, customer‑centric vision.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
You will establish yourself as a trusted member of the Payments Leadership team, guiding cross‑functional decisions with rigorous data insights. You will co‑drive payments strategy and product priorities, ensuring data is embedded early in discovery and design. You will identify untapped commercial opportunities, from pricing optimisation to new revenue streams, and translate technical findings into actionable business outcomes. You will set the data operating model for Payments, defining architecture, key metrics, and technical debt mitigation. You will build and scale a high‑performing data team that delivers measurable impact across product and commercial objectives. Finally, you will foster a culture of experimentation and continuous improvement, championing data literacy and self‑serve analytics across the organisation.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
You bring a proven track record of leading data initiatives in a fast‑moving payments or fintech environment, with deep expertise in analytics, machine learning, and data engineering. Your commercial acumen allows you to move fluidly between detailed metrics and strategic business decisions, driving pricing, monetisation, and growth. You have successfully built and managed full‑stack data teams, including data scientists, analytics engineers, and ML engineers, and you excel at hiring, coaching, and retaining top talent. You are an empathetic leader who builds trust quickly and raises performance standards. You thrive in cross‑functional collaboration, engaging senior stakeholders across product, engineering, design, marketing, and risk. You possess strong communication skills, capable of translating complex data concepts into clear, actionable insights for non‑technical audiences.
WHY REMOTE
Monzo’s distributed culture values asynchronous collaboration, allowing teams to work across time zones without compromising on cohesion or speed. Remote work offers flexibility that supports work‑life balance, enabling you to structure your day around high‑impact tasks while staying connected through regular video syncs and shared documentation. Our remote‑first mindset ensures that talent is sourced globally, fostering diverse perspectives and innovation. You will have access to the same robust infrastructure, tools, and support as your on‑site colleagues, ensuring a seamless experience regardless of location.

Monzo offers a comprehensive benefits package that includes competitive health coverage, a generous paid time off policy, and a remote working stipend to support your home office. You will receive a learning budget to pursue professional development and stay at the forefront of data science and payments technology. Equity participation aligns your success with Monzo’s growth, while a flexible schedule empowers you to deliver your best work. Together, these benefits create a supportive environment where you can thrive as a leader and innovator in the payments space.
