Job Description
ABOUT THE ROLE
The Norwich City Council is seeking a dedicated Caretaker to support the maintenance and wellbeing of our diverse housing stock. In this role you will safeguard the safety, cleanliness, and functionality of communal areas while fostering positive relationships with tenants. You will work closely with the Caretaking team to ensure that all council policies, including equal opportunities and health and safety standards, are upheld across the estate.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
You will conduct regular estate inspections, identify maintenance needs, and carry out minor repairs to keep communal spaces secure and welcoming. You will perform industrial‑grade cleaning tasks, including steam cleaning and polishing, to meet the British Industrial Cleaning Science standards. You will manage access control by programming fobs and monitoring security systems, recording all incidents and emergencies in the council’s digital diary. You will liaise with tenants to provide guidance on equipment use, resolve service issues, and promote council services. You will coordinate with contractors, documenting cleaning and maintenance work and ensuring compliance with health and safety procedures. You will attend scheduled meetings, including evening sessions, and participate in ongoing training to enhance your skills and contribute to team development.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
You must hold a full driving licence and possess practical experience in building maintenance and caretaking duties. You should be familiar with industrial cleaning equipment such as steam cleaners, high‑ and low‑speed polishers, and wet‑dry VAX machines. You will have basic computer skills to log incidents, update databases, and complete digital records. Strong interpersonal skills are essential to build trust with residents, managers, and colleagues, and you should be able to motivate and support others. You will demonstrate adaptability, initiative, and a commitment to the council’s equal opportunities and health and safety policies. A background in the British Institute of Cleaning Science or similar training is highly desirable.
