Scale AI
SWE Fellow - Human Frontier Collective (UK)
Job Description
ABOUT THE ROLE
The Human Frontier Collective Fellowship at Scale AI offers a unique opportunity for senior software engineers and research professionals to shape the next generation of AI systems. As a SWE Fellow, you will join a global network of leading academics and industry experts to design, evaluate, and refine generative AI models that drive critical decisions for enterprises and governments. Your work will directly influence the development of Scale’s flagship data platforms and the broader responsible‑AI research agenda.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
You will partner with Scale’s research and engineering teams to craft domain‑specific datasets that rigorously test model performance and safety. You will lead the design of evaluation protocols, analyze results, and translate findings into actionable insights that enhance model accuracy and reasoning. Your contributions will be documented in technical reports and peer‑reviewed publications, elevating the visibility of both your research and Scale’s innovations. You will also mentor junior researchers, participate in cross‑disciplinary workshops, and help shape the strategic direction of the Human Frontier Collective. Finally, you will represent Scale at conferences, webinars, and industry forums, advocating for responsible AI practices.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
You bring at least five years of professional software engineering experience or an equivalent track record in academia, such as a PhD, postdoctoral fellowship, or faculty role in computer science or a related field. You are proficient in one or more of Python, Java, Rust, Swift, JavaScript, or C++, and you have a deep understanding of machine learning pipelines, data engineering, and large‑scale model deployment. You are a detail‑oriented problem solver who thrives in collaborative, interdisciplinary environments. Strong written and verbal communication skills are essential for authoring research papers and presenting complex ideas to both technical and non‑technical audiences. You are comfortable working asynchronously with a distributed team and can manage your own schedule while meeting project milestones.
WHY REMOTE
Scale AI’s fully remote model empowers Fellows to work from any location that meets local employment regulations, allowing you to balance professional commitments with personal life. The asynchronous culture supports flexible hours, enabling you to contribute 10–40 hours per week according to your schedule. This arrangement fosters a diverse, global community of thinkers who bring varied perspectives to AI research, accelerating innovation and ensuring that solutions are inclusive and broadly applicable.
BENEFITS
As a 1099 contractor, you will receive a competitive project‑based remuneration commensurate with your expertise and the scope of work. Scale provides a remote working stipend to support home‑office setup and a learning budget to fund courses, conferences, or certifications that enhance your skill set. You will also have access to a curated library of research resources, industry‑leading datasets, and the full suite of Scale’s AI tools. In addition, Fellows gain early exposure to Scale’s high‑impact products, networking opportunities with top researchers, and the chance to co‑author influential papers that shape the future of responsible AI.
