ABOUT THE ROLE Scale AI is launching the Human Frontier Collective Fellowship to bring together leading researchers and domain experts to shape the future of artificial intelligence. As a SWE Fellow in Canada, you will work as an independent contractor on a six‑month program that may extend based on project needs. Your role will focus on designing, evaluating, and interpreting advanced generative AI systems while collaborating with Scale’s research team and partner AI labs. You will contribute to high‑impact projects that influence the reliability and safety of AI models used by governments, enterprises, and research institutions worldwide. WHAT YOU'LL DO You will design domain‑specific datasets and evaluation protocols to rigorously test generative AI models, ensuring they meet stringent accuracy and reasoning standards. You will collaborate closely with interdisciplinary teams, translating complex research questions into actionable engineering solutions. Your work will feed directly into technical reports and peer‑reviewed papers, enhancing both the scientific record and your professional visibility. You will provide expert insights that guide model improvements, balancing performance, fairness, and interpretability. You will also mentor junior researchers and contribute to the collective’s knowledge base, sharing best practices across the network. WHAT YOU'LL NEED You bring at least five years of software engineering or equivalent academic experience, such as a PhD, post‑doctoral research, or faculty position in computer science or a related field. You possess deep coding proficiency in Python, Java, Rust, Swift, JavaScript, or C++, and you are comfortable applying analytical methods to large‑scale data. You have a track record of solving complex problems in applied AI, demonstrated through publications, patents, or production systems. You are detail‑oriented, innovative, and thrive in collaborative, cross‑functional environments. You are authorized to work in Canada and understand the responsibilities of a 1099 contractor.
