Scale AI
STEM Fellow - Human Frontier Collective (US)
Job Description
ABOUT THE ROLE
Scale AI is launching the Human Frontier Collective (HFC) Fellowship to bring together leading researchers and domain experts who can shape the next generation of generative AI. As an HFC Fellow you will work as an independent contractor on a six‑month project, with the possibility of extension, collaborating with Scale’s research team and partner AI labs to design, evaluate, and interpret advanced AI systems. Your work will directly influence the development of high‑impact benchmarks and research publications that drive responsible AI across science and technology.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
You will design domain‑specific problem sets and datasets that rigorously test generative models, ensuring they meet the highest standards of accuracy and reasoning.
You will collaborate with interdisciplinary teams to refine evaluation protocols and provide expert insights that enhance model performance.
You will co‑author technical reports and research papers, contributing to Scale’s public research portfolio and elevating your academic visibility.
You will participate in the HFC community, sharing findings, attending virtual workshops, and mentoring junior researchers within the network.
You will manage project deliverables, timelines, and communication with Scale’s research leads, ensuring high‑quality outputs that align with the fellowship’s objectives.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
You hold a PhD, postdoctoral appointment, or professorship in a STEM discipline such as Computer Science, Machine Learning, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, or related fields.
You possess deep expertise in your domain and a proven track record of applied AI research, including publications or patents.
You are detail‑oriented, innovative, and comfortable translating complex scientific concepts into actionable AI evaluation strategies.
You have strong analytical skills, with experience designing experiments, curating datasets, and interpreting model outputs.
You are an effective communicator, able to present technical findings to both technical and non‑technical audiences.
You are authorized to work in the United States and understand the responsibilities of a 1099 independent contractor.
WHY REMOTE
The HFC Fellowship is fully remote, allowing you to set a flexible schedule that fits your life and other commitments. Our distributed culture relies on asynchronous collaboration, enabling teams across time zones to work together efficiently. You will have the autonomy to choose a work environment that maximizes your productivity while staying connected to a global network of thought leaders through virtual meetings, shared documentation, and collaborative research platforms.
BENEFITS
Although the role is a 1099 contract, Scale AI offers a competitive compensation package that reflects project scope, skill level, and location. You will receive a remote work stipend to support your home office setup. You will have access to a generous learning budget for conferences, courses, and professional development. The fellowship includes paid time off for rest and renewal, and health coverage options for contractors. You will also benefit from the HFC community’s mentorship, networking opportunities, and the chance to contribute to high‑impact research that shapes the future of AI.
