Staff Software Engineer - AI Platform / Distributed Systems Engineer

ABOUT THE ROLE Workato is seeking a highly skilled Staff Software Engineer to help define and build the distributed backend that powers our AI agent platform and the developer-facing products around it. As a Staff Engineer, you will play a key role in shaping the technical direction of our company, establishing architectural patterns, and building foundational systems that will support millions of users as our AI platform continues to grow. WHAT YOU'LL DO As a Staff Software Engineer, you will be responsible for architecting and building highly scalable, event-driven backend systems that remain correct, resilient, and available under partial failure and production load. You will also design the core platform capabilities, including APIs, streaming services, gateways, CLIs, and developer infrastructure, that power AI agents and developer-facing products. Additionally, you will lead the technical design and evolution of distributed systems, integrating LLMs, agent frameworks, MCP, RAG, and other AI-native capabilities into production systems that serve enterprise customers. You will drive initiatives end-to-end, from product ideation and technical strategy through architecture, implementation, deployment, observability, and continuous improvement. You will partner closely with Product, Infrastructure, AI Research, and Developer Relations to shape the roadmap and developer experience for our AI platform. You will also establish engineering best practices through architecture reviews, design leadership, code reviews, technical mentorship, and raising the engineering bar across the organization. WHAT YOU'LL NEED To be successful in this role, you will need to have a strong background in software engineering, with a focus on distributed systems, event-driven architecture, and scalable backend systems. You should have experience with languages such as Java, Python, or Scala, and be familiar with cloud-native architectures and containerization. You should also have excellent communication and leadership skills, with the ability to influence technical direction and establish architectural patterns.
