Job Description

ABOUT THE ROLE Anthropic is building the next generation of safe, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. As the Policy Design Manager for Conventional Weapons, you will lead the creation and maintenance of the company’s policy framework that defines how our models may or may not support weapons development. Your work will shape the boundary between legitimate research and prohibited content, ensuring that Claude remains a tool for positive impact while preventing misuse in the domain of conventional weapons. You will collaborate with engineering, product, legal, and leadership teams to translate complex technical judgments into actionable guardrails, detection systems, and enforcement mechanisms. WHAT YOU'LL DO You will own the conventional weapons policy, continuously refining its scope to reflect evolving technology and threat landscapes. You will develop threat models and evaluation protocols that measure the potential of our models to contribute to weapons development, including software, autonomy, and guidance components. You will partner with engineering to embed policy into model guardrails, detection pipelines, and enforcement tooling. You will act as the subject‑matter expert on escalations involving weapons content, providing rapid response to emerging risks. You will communicate policy reasoning to both technical and non‑technical audiences, building shared understanding across product, engineering, legal, and leadership. You will engage external experts, government agencies, and industry partners to strengthen policy and enforcement through informed collaboration. WHAT YOU'LL NEED You possess deep applied expertise in weapons systems and can translate complex technical evidence into sound policy judgments. You have experience in a relevant setting such as a defense research laboratory, a weapons design company, or a national innovation agency. You can write clear, operationally precise policy and explain technical concepts to non‑specialists. You understand the legal frameworks governing weapons transfer and can craft policy that holds up across jurisdictions. You are skilled at rigorous technical analysis of weapons systems using open‑source data. You thrive in ambiguous environments and are motivated to prevent misuse while preserving legitimate research. Preferred experience includes a working understanding of machine learning and large‑language‑model fundamentals, hands‑on engineering in a weapons‑relevant domain, application of arms export controls, and building or evaluating classifiers for rare, high‑consequence categories. Experience in trust and safety or product policy at a technology platform is also valuable. WHY REMOTE Anthropic embraces a distributed, asynchronous culture that empowers teams to collaborate across time zones while maintaining a strong sense of community. Remote work enables you to bring the best talent from around the world, fostering diverse perspectives on complex policy challenges. Flexible schedules allow you to balance deep analytical work with collaboration across global teams, ensuring that policy development remains agile and responsive to emerging threats. The remote environment supports a healthy work‑life balance, reducing commuting time and allowing you to focus on high‑impact contributions. BENEFITS Anthropic offers a competitive salary range of $245,000 to $285,000 annually, commensurate with experience. You will receive comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage, a generous paid time off policy, and a remote work stipend to support your home office setup. We provide a learning budget for professional development, access to industry conferences, and a robust equity program. Additionally, you will benefit from a supportive culture that values safety, inclusion, and continuous improvement.
