Staff Software Engineer (Platform - FinEng)
Job Description
ABOUT THE ROLE
We are seeking a highly skilled Staff Software Engineer to join our Financial Engineering team within the Platform group at Coinbase. As a Staff Software Engineer, you will own the architecture and long-term technical strategy for the financial data and reporting systems that power our financial operations. You will define and drive the foundational backend systems at the intersection of engineering rigor and financial precision, building infrastructure that scales with our growth across crypto, fiat, and new verticals.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
As a Staff Software Engineer, you will be responsible for:
- Owning the multi-year technical strategy and architecture for Coinbase's financial data pipelines, reporting systems, and operational infrastructure, defining how these systems scale across entities, currencies, and product lines.
- Driving the design and delivery of new backend services in Golang, applying modern cloud technology and setting engineering standards that solve novel financial engineering problems at increasing scale.
- Leading high-stakes initiatives to improve the accuracy, timeliness, and auditability of financial data, proactively identifying systemic risks and architecting resilient solutions before issues arise.
- Partnering cross-functionally with Finance, Accounting, Tax, Compliance, and other Platform teams to translate complex financial and regulatory requirements into scalable, well-tested technical solutions.
- Shaping the team's technical culture by mentoring senior engineers, leading design reviews, and establishing architectural patterns and coding standards that elevate the bar across Financial Engineering.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- 8+ years of backend software development experience, including designing, building, and scaling large-scale distributed systems in production with a strong understanding of service-oriented architecture.
- Leadership experience in platform-building efforts that transformed fragmented services into coherent, reusable systems (e.g., shared frameworks, unified APIs, multi-tenant architectures) within financial or transactional domains.
- Deep expertise in Go (or similar backend languages) with proven ability to architect fault-tolerant, highly reliable systems handling high-volume financial data across multiple entities and currencies.
- A track record of setting technical direction across teams, influencing roadmaps, and driving alignment with both technical and non-technical stakeholders through staff-level architecture forums.
- Proven ability to translate complex financial, accounting, or compliance requirements into well-structured, maintainable systems that operate with precision at scale.
- Experience utilizing generative AI responsibly, maintaining human oversight to deliver business-ready outputs and drive measurable improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.
WHY REMOTE
Coinbase is a remote-first company, but not remote-only. As a remote employee, you will have the opportunity to work from anywhere while being part of a dynamic and collaborative team. You will also have the chance to participate in quarterly in-person working sessions called “surges” where you will get together with your colleagues to work intensively on projects and share knowledge.
