Staff Software Engineer, Developer Infrastructure

ABOUT THE ROLE We are seeking a highly skilled Staff Software Engineer to lead the technical direction for test infrastructure across Coinbase's engineering teams. As a key member of the Platform team, you will own the systems that turn testing into a speed advantage, enabling engineers to ship with confidence and without reruns. WHAT YOU'LL DO As a Staff Software Engineer, you will define and own the technical strategy for test infrastructure, driving measurable improvements in test feedback speed and signal reliability. Your responsibilities will include: - Defining and owning the technical strategy for test infrastructure across Coinbase engineering, with feedback speed as a core design constraint - Building and operating core test infrastructure services, including test orchestration, smart test selection, sharding, flaky-test detection, and test result analysis - Driving measurable improvements in test feedback speed and signal reliability so engineers can ship with confidence and without reruns - Owning systems end to end, including architecture, observability, SLOs, and on-call operations - Partnering with engineering teams across Coinbase to identify bottlenecks and turn them into platform improvements - Mentoring engineers, raising technical standards, and shaping how the organization approaches test infrastructure WHAT YOU'LL NEED To succeed in this role, you will need: - 10+ years of experience building and operating production software, with distributed systems fundamentals and proficiency in Go or a similar language - A track record of defining and delivering technical strategy for foundational systems that other teams depend on - Deep experience in test infrastructure, including test execution at scale, flaky-test detection, test selection and its tradeoffs between speed and coverage, sharding, or test result analysis - Proven experience operating reliable systems at scale using Kubernetes, AWS, GitHub Actions, Terraform, containers, and observability tooling such as Datadog - Demonstrated success measuring platform impact through developer adoption and workflow improvements, with experience building and maintaining SLOs and incident response processes - Ability to utilize generative AI responsibly, maintaining human oversight to deliver business-ready outputs and drive measurable improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality WHY REMOTE Coinbase is a remote-first company, but not remote-only. You can expect to get together quarterly for intense in-person working sessions called "surges." This allows you to collaborate with your team in person while still enjoying the flexibility of remote work. BENEFITS Coinbase offers a competitive total compensation package, including an annual base salary range of $218,025 - $256,500 USD, equity, and bonus eligibility, as well as benefits such as medical, dental, vision, and 401(k).
