Staff Software Engineer, Compute Platform (Routing)

ABOUT THE ROLE Coinbase is building the future of finance by creating an open, global economy that is accessible to everyone. As a Staff Software Engineer on the Compute Platform team within the Platform Product Group, you will own the routing layer that connects every service at Coinbase to its customers. The Compute Platform team builds and operates core compute orchestration infrastructure based on CNCF technologies such as Istio, Envoy, and Kubernetes. In this role you will design and deliver new routing capabilities that improve the scalability, reliability, and performance of application traffic across our entire fleet, enabling Coinbase to serve millions of users with low latency and high availability. WHAT YOU'LL DO You will design, develop, and automate routing infrastructure that directs application traffic to Kubernetes backends at scale, ensuring seamless connectivity for all internal and external services. You will build capabilities on top of Envoy‑based reverse proxies, Istio gateways, Ambient mesh, and SPIFFE service authentication to provide secure, efficient traffic management. You will drive measurable improvements to latency, reliability, and performance of routing systems across Coinbase’s production environment, collaborating with cross‑functional teams to define and track key metrics. You will shape the developer experience for operating applications at Coinbase, focusing on AI‑driven tooling, streamlined processes, and robust support. You will partner with Security, Reliability, and Observability teams to enforce platform requirements and maintain a resilient, compliant routing stack. WHAT YOU'LL NEED You bring eight or more years of software engineering and infrastructure experience, with at least five years of hands‑on work with application routing technologies such as reverse proxies, ingress controllers, CDNs/WAFs, and service meshes. You are proficient in one or more systems programming languages—Go, Python, or Java—and have a proven track record of building and shipping production‑grade infrastructure services. You have deep familiarity with the CNCF ecosystem, including Kubernetes, Envoy, and Istio, and have successfully extended or contributed to these technologies in a production setting. You are experienced scaling backend infrastructure on AWS, with a solid understanding of networking, compute, and container orchestration services. You possess strong analytical skills, able to diagnose complex distributed system issues, identify root causes, and drive independent resolution. You responsibly leverage generative AI to enhance workflow efficiency, reduce costs, and improve quality, while maintaining human oversight to ensure business‑ready outcomes.
