Staff Software Engineer, Banking
Job Description
ABOUT THE ROLE
We're seeking a highly skilled Staff Software Engineer to join our Banking team at Brex. As a Staff Software Engineer in Banking, you will play a key role in shaping the technical direction of one of our most strategic and complex product areas. You will work across customer-facing product surfaces and core financial infrastructure, driving architecture, reliability, and execution across that full stack.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
In this role, you will lead technical strategy for critical Banking initiatives, balancing long-term architecture with near-term delivery needs across multiple teams. You will drive the design and evolution of reliable, scalable systems for money movement, bank account experiences, payment orchestration, and related financial infrastructure. You will partner cross-functionally with product, design, operations, compliance, risk, and accounting to turn complex business and regulatory requirements into durable technical solutions.
You will identify and resolve systemic reliability, quality, and operability issues, improving observability, incident prevention, and engineering standards over time. You will provide technical leadership across teams by driving architecture reviews, aligning stakeholders, and helping teams make strong tradeoffs in ambiguous spaces. You will mentor senior engineers and emerging technical leaders, helping raise the bar on system design, execution, and technical ownership within the Banking org.
You will also contribute directly when needed, whether through design, debugging, rollout strategy, or implementation, especially for high-stakes initiatives and critical path decisions.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- 8+ years of software engineering experience, including experience operating as a senior technical leader on complex, multi-team initiatives
- Demonstrated track record of leading architecture and delivery for large-scale distributed systems in a product or platform engineering environment
- Strong systems thinking and the ability to simplify complex technical and organizational problems into clear, actionable plans
- Experience improving reliability, operational excellence, and engineering quality in production systems with meaningful customer or business impact
- Ability to work effectively across engineering, product, design, operations, compliance, risk, and other cross-functional partners
- Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to influence senior stakeholders and align teams without direct authority
- Hands-on technical depth and sound engineering judgment, including the ability to dive into implementation details when needed
- Experience mentoring and leading technical teams
