ABOUT THE ROLE We're looking for a highly skilled Staff Engineer to play a critical role in shaping the future of Later's technology stack. As a senior-level engineer, you'll thrive in fast-paced, high-growth environments and take ownership of complex, high-impact initiatives. You'll scope, lead, and deliver large projects that elevate our platform while mentoring others and upholding a high bar for engineering excellence. WHAT YOU'LL DO As a Staff Engineer at Later, you'll be responsible for leading large-scale technical initiatives, ensuring alignment with business priorities and product roadmaps. You'll anticipate risks, identify opportunities for innovation, and guide technical decision-making to deliver long-term impact. Your key responsibilities will include: - Designing, building, and optimizing scalable systems across the stack, from frontend (React, TypeScript) to backend (Node.js) - Delivering production-grade features end-to-end, while maintaining performance, security, and reliability at scale - Improving and maintaining codebases, ensuring clean architecture, best practices in testing and deployment, and strong CI/CD pipelines - Debugging and resolving complex issues across systems and services, serving as the go-to expert when problems arise - Implementing and advocating for strong application and infrastructure security practices - Partnering cross-functionally with Product, Design, and other Engineering teams to clarify requirements, resolve ambiguities, and deliver solutions that delight users - Communicating technical and non-technical ideas clearly, ensuring stakeholders and teammates feel informed and engaged - Acting as a technical mentor, coaching junior and mid-level engineers while fostering a culture of collaboration and learning - Staying current on emerging tools, frameworks, and methods that can drive performance, security, and scalability - Experimenting with new technologies—including AI/ML applications—and sharing learnings to elevate team performance - Promoting continuous improvement, introducing practices that improve speed, quality, and developer experience WHAT YOU'LL NEED To succeed in this role, you'll need: - 5+ years of experience in software engineering, with a strong background in leading technical initiatives and mentoring others - Proficiency in languages such as TypeScript, Node.js, and React - Experience with scalable system design, cloud infrastructure, and containerization - Strong understanding of security best practices and experience implementing secure systems - Excellent communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams - Strong problem-solving skills, with the ability to debug and resolve complex issues - Experience with continuous integration and continuous deployment (CI/CD) pipelines - Strong understanding of emerging tools, frameworks, and methods that can drive performance, security, and scalability WHY REMOTE As a remote team, we're looking for individuals who are self-motivated, disciplined, and able to work effectively in a distributed environment.
