Job Description

ABOUT THE ROLE As a Staff Backend Engineer on the CD team at GitLab, you will be a foundational technical leader on a high-visibility greenfield initiative that bridges the intersection of GitLab's core platform and its AI strategy. This role offers a rare opportunity to define the technical foundation of a high-visibility product area inside an established company operating at significant scale. WHAT YOU'LL DO As a key member of the CD team, you will be responsible for leading technical execution on the CD platform, decomposing complex architectural designs into well-scoped, deliverable work, and driving the team to ship with quality and confidence. You will also solve high-complexity engineering problems, contribute architectural feedback that shapes how the system evolves, and set and maintain the technical bar across the codebase through code review, mentorship, and example. Additionally, you will mentor engineers at all levels, represent the CD team in cross-functional engineering discussions, and contribute to written technical proposals and architectural documents. WHAT YOU'LL NEED To be successful in this role, you will need to have deep professional experience building backend services in Go, with a track record in high-scale production environments. You will also need to have demonstrated expertise in distributed systems design, including durable workflow execution, state persistence, and event-driven architectures. Experience leading or contributing to release orchestration, deployment automation, or continuous delivery systems at scale is also essential. You should be familiar with Docker and Kubernetes at production scale, including progressive delivery patterns such as blue/green and canary deployments, and have strong familiarity with GitOps workflows and tools in that ecosystem. WHY REMOTE As a fully remote company, GitLab offers the flexibility to work from anywhere, allowing you to maintain a healthy work-life balance and be more productive. Our remote work environment is designed to foster collaboration, innovation, and growth, with a strong emphasis on async communication and documentation-first practices. BENEFITS GitLab offers a comprehensive benefits package to support your health, finances, and well-being, including flexible paid time off, team member resource groups, equity compensation, and an employee stock purchase plan.
