Staff AI Engineer - Data Visualization

ABOUT THE ROLE As a Staff AI Engineer - Data Visualization at Datadog, you will join a highly product-oriented organization responsible for building AI-native experiences that help customers understand, investigate, and interact with complex operational data. This team is at the forefront of developing AI-powered product experiences across Datadog's visualization and investigation surfaces. As a technical leader, you will provide expertise in applying AI technologies to customer-facing product experiences, shaping how users interact with Datadog through agents, conversational interfaces, and intelligent investigation workflows. WHAT YOU'LL DO As a Staff AI Engineer, you will lead the design and delivery of AI-powered product experiences across Datadog's visualization and investigation surfaces. Your responsibilities will include developing systems that combine deterministic product capabilities with LLM-powered experiences to deliver trustworthy and explainable customer outcomes. You will drive innovation in context engineering, prompt engineering, evaluation frameworks, and AI application reliability. Additionally, you will partner with product and engineering teams to improve investigation workflows and help customers discover insights more efficiently. You will also build experiences that enable Datadog capabilities to operate within third-party AI platforms, agents, and conversational environments. Furthermore, you will provide technical leadership and mentorship while helping establish AI engineering best practices across the Data Visualization organization and broader Graphing group. WHAT YOU'LL NEED To succeed in this role, you will need extensive software engineering experience, currently operating at or near Staff Engineer scope. You should have hands-on experience delivering production AI-powered products and customer-facing experiences using LLM technologies. You should also have experience building reliable systems that manage model non-determinism through evaluation frameworks, testing strategies, and operational excellence. A product mindset and the ability to connect technical decisions to customer outcomes and business impact are essential. Experience collaborating across multiple teams and influencing technical direction without direct authority is also valuable. Experience with agentic systems, conversational interfaces, AI-assisted investigations, observability, data visualization, or developer tools is a plus.
