Sr. Staff Technical Risk Architect, Unified Training

ABOUT THE ROLE Coinbase is building the future of institutional trading as part of the Everything Exchange, powering the systems that let the world’s largest financial institutions trade across markets with speed, depth, and trust. As a Sr. Staff Technical Risk Architect in the Unified Training team, you will lead the design, implementation, and continuous improvement of the core trading infrastructure that serves our Retail, Prime, and wholesale brokerage customers. Your work will directly shape the reliability, performance, and security of a platform that processes billions of dollars in transactions every day, ensuring that every order is executed accurately and in record time. WHAT YOU’LL DO - Own the architecture of the end‑to‑end trading platform, including the sequencer, low‑latency connectivity, messaging fabric, OMS/EMS, multi‑venue connectivity, and execution layers. - Design and deliver low‑latency, high‑throughput systems for real‑time financial products used across institutional and retail markets. - Define and enforce SLOs, observability, and incident response processes for systems where correctness and latency are non‑negotiable. - Set the technical bar through code, design reviews, and standards, and aggressively pay down the most critical technical debt. - Reduce single‑point‑of‑failure risk across the trading stack and build team resilience through mentorship and knowledge sharing. - Partner cross‑functionally with Product, Risk, Security, and Compliance to translate technical vision into a clear, executable roadmap. WHAT YOU’LL NEED - Proven experience as a hands‑on architect who has designed, built, deployed, and supported 24/7 trading systems that process billions of dollars daily. - Extensive backend engineering expertise with ownership of complex, production‑grade distributed systems. - A track record of architecting an end‑to‑end trading platform, including OMS, front‑ and middle‑office components, and multi‑exchange connectivity. - Deep proficiency in low‑latency Java and high‑throughput messaging frameworks such as Aeron or SBE, and experience building event‑driven, high‑availability systems. - End‑to‑end delivery experience: scoping, architecture, implementation, monitoring, and iteration. - Experience building systems in regulated or financial environments where correctness, auditability, and low‑latency performance are critical. - Demonstrated ability to make user‑facing product decisions that balance engineering trade‑offs with end‑user quality. - Responsible use of generative AI with human oversight to deliver business‑ready outputs and measurable improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.
