LaunchDarkly
Sr Backend Engineer, Flag Delivery
Job Description
ABOUT THE ROLE
As a Sr Backend Engineer on the Flag Delivery team at LaunchDarkly, you will play a critical role in empowering teams to deliver and control software safely. Your primary responsibility will be to own the critical-path systems that stream feature-flag configuration to every connected SDK globally, in near real time. These systems must be reliable, low-latency, and correct, as any failure can result in customers losing control of their features.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
You will work on the next generation of the flag-delivery architecture, streaming rollouts, and reliability and scale hardening. Your key responsibilities will include:
- Designing, building, and operating distributed systems that deliver feature-flag configuration to LaunchDarkly SDKs
- Owning and improving the reliability, latency, and scalability of our streaming and polling infrastructure
- Debugging and resolving complex production issues, sharing the team's on-call rotation
- Partnering with SDK, Core Product, and Data Platform teams on how flags reach customers
- Writing maintainable, well-tested code and engaging in code reviews, design reviews, and production-readiness discussions
- Driving architectural decisions, trading off performance, cost, and operability
- Raising the bar on observability, deployment safety, and operational process for Flag Delivery
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- 6+ years of professional backend engineering experience, with significant work on distributed or high-throughput production systems
- A track record of designing, building, operating, and debugging reliable, low-latency services
- Strong production ownership, including on-call experience and a focus on reliability and observability
- Proficiency in at least one backend language (Go, Rust, Python) and comfort on a cloud platform (AWS or equivalent)
- Hands-on experience with infrastructure-as-code (Terraform or equivalent) and observability tooling (Datadog, Prometheus, New Relic)
- A deep grasp of distributed-systems fundamentals: concurrency, partitioning, retries, idempotency, backpressure, and failure handling
- The ability to write clean, maintainable code and collaborate well on technical design
- Excellent communication skills and a high bar for operational excellence
WHY REMOTE
As a remote employee, you will have the flexibility to work from anywhere and enjoy a high level of autonomy. You will be part of a team that values trust, transparency, and open communication.
