Senior Staff Software Engineer, Finhub

ABOUT THE ROLE Coinbase is on a mission to increase economic freedom by building the most trusted and accessible financial platform in the world. As a Senior Staff Software Engineer on the FinHub team within the Platform Product Group, you will own the technical vision for the core financial infrastructure that powers every transaction on the platform. FinHub is the foundation for account balances, money movement, and the integrity of all trading, payments, financing, staking, and other financial products. Your leadership will shape the architecture that guarantees correctness, security, reliability, and scalability as Coinbase scales to billions of dollars in daily volume. WHAT YOU'LL DO You will define and drive a multi‑quarter technical strategy for FinHub’s ledger and money‑movement platform, ensuring it can support new products and exponential growth in transaction volume. You will architect unified, reusable primitives across fiat and crypto fund flows, including balances, holds, settlements, postings, transfers, and transaction history. You will lead the rearchitecture of distributed financial workflows and state transitions, enforcing standards for double‑entry accounting, idempotency, invariant enforcement, reconciliation, auditability, and safe failure recovery. You will own the end‑to‑end design and rollout of large cross‑team initiatives, breaking complex problems into clear milestones, migration plans, and measurable outcomes. You will partner with Payments, Product, Finance, Risk, Compliance, and Operations to align platform architecture with customer experience, regulatory obligations, and business priorities. Finally, you will provide deep technical mentorship to senior and staff engineers, raising the bar for system design, operational excellence, technical writing, and long‑term maintainability across FinHub. WHAT YOU'LL NEED You bring 12+ years of software engineering experience, including a proven track record of building and operating large‑scale backend distributed systems in production. You have deep experience designing financial, payments, ledger, banking, or trading systems where correctness and auditability are non‑negotiable. Your expertise in distributed systems, consistency models, asynchronous workflows, and state machines is complemented by strong backend programming skills in Go, Java, or Python. You have a history of driving multi‑quarter technical strategy and leading complex architectural initiatives across multiple engineering teams without relying on direct authority. You communicate complex technical trade‑offs clearly and build alignment with executive, engineering, product, finance, and operations stakeholders. You responsibly use generative AI, maintaining human oversight to deliver business‑ready outputs and measurable improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.
