Cloudflare
Senior Software Engineer - Quicksilver - Distributed Key Value
Job Description
ABOUT THE ROLE
Cloudflare’s Quicksilver is the backbone of our global edge network, delivering a highly available, low‑latency key‑value store that spans tens of thousands of servers and over five hundred data centers worldwide. As a Senior Software Engineer on the Quicksilver team, you will own and evolve the entire stack—from core Go and C code to monitoring, alerting, and on‑call operations—ensuring that our distributed system remains resilient under the most demanding network conditions and hardware failures. Your work will directly impact the performance and reliability of every internet application that relies on Cloudflare’s edge, enabling billions of requests per second with minimal latency.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
You will design and implement new features in Go, reviewing pull requests and maintaining rigorous code quality standards. You will lead performance tuning efforts, optimizing CPU, memory, and network usage across the distributed fabric. You will expand our observability stack, building dashboards and alerting rules that surface subtle anomalies before they affect customers. You will investigate and resolve hard‑to‑reproduce bugs that traverse multiple layers of the software stack, collaborating closely with operations and reliability teams. You will participate in on‑call rotations, troubleshooting outages and ensuring rapid rollback plans. You will mentor junior engineers, fostering a culture of constructive feedback and continuous improvement.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
You bring at least five years of experience building large‑scale, distributed systems, with deep expertise in Go and low‑level systems programming in C. You have a proven track record of delivering robust, high‑performance storage or peer‑to‑peer solutions, and you understand the trade‑offs between engineering rigor and rapid iteration. You are comfortable chasing bugs through complex layers of software and hardware, and you thrive in a fast‑paced, autonomous environment. You possess strong analytical skills, a pragmatic mindset, and a passion for elegant, simple designs that solve complex problems. You are an excellent communicator, able to articulate technical concepts to both engineering and non‑engineering stakeholders. You are willing to engage in on‑call duties, including anti‑social hours, to keep the service running smoothly.
WHY REMOTE
Cloudflare embraces a fully distributed, asynchronous culture that empowers engineers to work from anywhere. Our remote model removes geographical constraints, allowing you to collaborate with a global team of experts while maintaining a flexible schedule that supports work‑life balance. We provide the tools and processes needed for seamless collaboration—high‑quality video conferencing, real‑time code review, and a robust incident management system—so you can contribute effectively from any location. The remote environment also encourages continuous learning and innovation, as engineers are free to pursue personal growth opportunities without the friction of commuting or office politics.
BENEFITS
Cloudflare offers a comprehensive benefits package that supports your health, financial security, and personal growth. You will receive medical, dental, and vision insurance, along with flexible spending accounts and global travel medical coverage. Our financial benefits include a 401(k) retirement plan with company match, short‑ and long‑term disability insurance, life and accident coverage, and participation in our equity program. You will enjoy flexible paid time off, generous parental and bereavement leave, and a remote stipend to offset home‑office expenses. Additionally, we provide a learning budget for courses, conferences, and certifications, encouraging continuous skill development.
