Senior Software Engineer (Platform - Access & Authorization)

ABOUT THE ROLE Coinbase is building the most trusted platform for global financial services, and the Access & Authorization team is at the heart of that mission. As a Senior Software Engineer on this team, you will architect and deliver the foundational authentication and authorization services that secure every customer interaction across web, mobile, API, and partner ecosystems. Your work will directly influence the safety, usability, and scalability of Coinbase’s products, enabling millions of users to transact with confidence while meeting stringent regulatory and security standards. WHAT YOU'LL DO You will own the end‑to‑end design, implementation, and operation of authentication, OAuth, session, token, 2FA, account recovery, and edge‑authorization capabilities. You will build secure, low‑latency Go and gRPC services that run at scale, with robust observability, failure testing, and measurable SLOs. You will lead technical designs for advanced initiatives such as signed authorization tokens, passkeys, biometric recovery, device‑aware authentication, and mobile OAuth. You will partner with product, security, fraud, and infrastructure teams to balance customer conversion, account protection, regulatory compliance, and engineering constraints. You will simplify integration patterns and build self‑service tooling that empowers product teams to adopt access and authorization features safely at scale. You will mentor junior engineers, raise the technical bar through design reviews, pairing, code reviews, and on‑call participation. WHAT YOU'LL NEED You bring at least five years of backend software engineering experience, with strong proficiency in Go or a comparable systems‑oriented language, and a proven record of building and operating high‑throughput distributed services in production. You have deep experience designing secure APIs and reasoning about authentication, authorization, session management, trust boundaries, and token handling (OAuth 2.0, OpenID Connect, JWTs, PKCE, or related standards). You are proficient with gRPC, Protocol Buffers, and data stores such as Redis or DynamoDB, and you possess strong operational instincts using metrics, logs, traces, alerts, and SLOs to run critical services. You have a track record of delivering complex, cross‑functional projects from technical design through production rollout, and you communicate clearly with engineering, security, product, and infrastructure partners. You responsibly leverage generative AI, maintaining human oversight to deliver business‑ready outputs and measurable improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.
