ABOUT THE ROLE
The Senior Software Engineer, Blockchain Platform Nodes will be a key member of Coinbase’s Platform organization, responsible for the reliability, performance, and cost efficiency of the blockchain node fleet that powers every asset offered to customers. This role sits at the intersection of systems engineering and blockchain technology, providing deep technical leadership on node performance, observability, and capacity planning across more than fifty distinct protocols, including Ethereum, Bitcoin, and Solana. You will collaborate with protocol integration engineers, wallet teams, and indexer developers to ensure that every layer of the platform operates at peak efficiency while meeting stringent reliability Service Level Objectives.
Your work will directly impact the economic freedom mission of Coinbase by delivering a resilient, scalable infrastructure that supports millions of users worldwide. You will own the end‑to‑end lifecycle of node optimization, from root‑cause analysis and performance tuning to automated failover and health‑check systems. Your expertise will help reduce infrastructure spend, improve latency, and enable faster protocol upgrades, ensuring that Coinbase remains a trusted gateway to digital assets.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
You will conduct in‑depth performance analysis and optimization across the blockchain node stack, diagnosing resource bottlenecks and implementing system‑level fixes that reduce infrastructure costs while preserving reliability SLOs. You will design and build observability, health‑check, and automated failover capabilities that allow the team to detect and respond to degradation proactively. You will lead a right‑sizing initiative, profiling workloads, identifying over‑provisioned instances, and establishing capacity models that balance cost efficiency with reliability headroom. You will partner with cross‑functional teams to extend performance improvements beyond the node layer, ensuring that protocol integration, wallet, and indexer services also benefit from your optimizations. You will define and implement SLOs and SLIs for node services, creating a measurement framework that gives the team confidence in reliability without relying on over‑provisioning. You will support protocol upgrades and node operations with a performance‑first lens, validating new blockchain versions for resource efficiency and regression‑testing them before production rollout.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
You will bring at least five years of software engineering experience with deep expertise in systems‑level performance analysis, profiling, and optimization of production infrastructure. You will have hands‑on experience operating distributed systems at scale, diagnosing resource bottlenecks, tuning service performance, and managing capacity across heterogeneous workloads. You will be proficient in backend programming, preferably Go, and comfortable with profiling, tracing, and observability tooling such as pprof, Datadog, Prometheus, and Grafana. You will have a proven track record of reducing infrastructure costs through engineering optimization, with measurable outcomes such as cost reduction percentages and latency improvements. Experience with blockchain nodes, consensus protocols, or crypto infrastructure is strongly preferred, as is familiarity with how different protocols behave under load and during upgrades. You will responsibly utilize generative AI, maintaining human oversight to deliver business‑ready outputs and drive measurable improvements in workflow efficiency, cost, and quality.
