Gitlab
Senior Backend Engineer (Go), Tenant Scale: Gitaly
Job Description
ABOUT THE ROLE
GitLab’s Gitaly team builds the backbone of GitLab’s Git data storage tier, delivering reliable, secure, and high‑performance access to repositories for GitLab.com, self‑managed customers, and GitLab Dedicated. As a Senior Backend Engineer you will shape the next generation of source code management, tackling distributed storage, repository management, and high‑availability challenges that power millions of developers worldwide. Your work will directly influence the speed, reliability, and scalability of Git operations across the entire platform, ensuring that every push, pull, and merge is executed with minimal latency and maximum resilience.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
You will own complex technical initiatives from concept through production, driving design, implementation, rollout, and post‑release monitoring with minimal oversight. You will lead cross‑functional design sessions with Git, Infrastructure, SRE, and customer‑facing teams, translating business needs into robust, data‑driven engineering solutions. Your responsibilities will include incident response, capacity planning, and performance tuning, as well as mentoring junior engineers and elevating team practices through code reviews, documentation, and knowledge sharing. You will also identify opportunities for automation, reusable patterns, and upstream contributions that improve the developer experience and operational efficiency. Regular on‑call duties will be part of your role, ensuring that critical alerts and support requests are addressed promptly.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
You bring extensive experience building, debugging, and optimizing distributed or highly available systems at scale, with a proven track record of owning end‑to‑end projects. Strong systems‑design skills and the ability to reason about performance, consistency, concurrency, and observability are essential. You have a history of influencing technical decisions across teams and mentoring peers to raise code quality and design standards. Proficiency in Go and familiarity with backend or systems programming is required; experience with Ruby, Git internals, gRPC, or Git server infrastructure is highly desirable. You are comfortable operating in production environments, participating in incident response, and translating operational insights into durable improvements. Excellent written and verbal communication skills enable you to explain complex concepts and articulate trade‑offs clearly to stakeholders at all levels.
WHY REMOTE
GitLab’s distributed, asynchronous culture empowers engineers to work from anywhere while collaborating effectively through real‑time chat, video, and shared documentation. Flexible schedules accommodate diverse time zones, allowing you to balance productivity with personal commitments. The remote model fosters a focus on outcomes rather than hours, enabling you to deliver high‑impact work while maintaining a healthy work‑life balance. Our culture values autonomy, continuous learning, and transparent communication, ensuring that remote team members feel connected, supported, and integral to the product’s success.
BENEFITS
You will receive comprehensive health coverage, a generous paid time off policy, and a remote working stipend to support your home office setup. GitLab offers a learning budget for courses, conferences, and certifications, encouraging continuous skill development. Additional benefits include equity participation, retirement plans, and a culture of psychological safety that empowers you to innovate and grow.
