Senior Backend Engineer, Experimentation

ABOUT THE ROLE LaunchDarkly is building a world‑class experimentation platform that empowers engineering teams to make data‑driven product decisions with statistical confidence. As a Senior Backend Engineer on the Experimentation team you will shape the core services that power this product, working at the intersection of large‑scale distributed systems, data science, and user experience. Your work will directly influence how customers design, run, and analyze experiments at scale, and you will help define the future of modern software experimentation. WHAT YOU'LL DO You will design, build, and operate scalable backend services and APIs that support experiment setup, event ingestion, metric computation, result processing, and presentation. You will own components throughout their lifecycle, from technical discovery and design through implementation, testing, deployment, monitoring, incident response, and continuous improvement. You will collaborate with product managers, designers, data scientists, and adjacent engineering teams to translate customer needs into reliable technical solutions. You will contribute to architectural decisions, making thoughtful trade‑offs around scalability, reliability, performance, cost, and maintainability. You will investigate complex production issues, identify root causes, and implement durable fixes while improving observability, testing, deployment safety, and operational processes. You will participate in the on‑call rotation and take ownership of production systems in a you‑build‑it‑you‑run‑it culture, supporting teammates through code reviews, design reviews, knowledge sharing, and informal mentorship. WHAT YOU'LL NEED You have six or more years of professional software engineering experience, with a strong background building and operating backend services in production. You are fluent in Go and comfortable with distributed systems, event‑driven architectures, data pipelines, APIs, and data‑intensive services. You have experience designing and delivering customer‑facing systems that are scalable, reliable, observable, and maintainable, and you are familiar with analytical, operational, or warehouse data stores such as ClickHouse, Postgres, Snowflake, or equivalent technologies. You possess strong problem‑solving skills, can take an ambiguous problem from discovery through launch and ongoing operation, and have a proven track record of diagnosing production issues and improving system reliability through metrics, logs, traces, and alerting. You are a clear, thoughtful communicator who collaborates effectively with both technical and non‑technical partners, and you have experience with experimentation, A/B testing, analytics, or similar data‑intensive products. You are comfortable working in a cloud environment and with infrastructure‑as‑code or equivalent deployment and operations tooling. You are also proficient in using AI tools to enhance software engineering workflows, with the judgment to evaluate and validate AI‑generated output.
