Senior AI Engineer

ABOUT THE ROLE We're seeking a highly skilled Senior AI Engineer to help drive GitLab's transformation into an AI-first company. As a key member of our team, you'll be responsible for delivering internal AI-powered solutions that drive measurable business outcomes. WHAT YOU'LL DO As a Senior AI Engineer, you'll be a hands-on technical leader responsible for delivering internal AI-powered solutions. Your key responsibilities will include: - Diagnosing business problems and mapping workflows to identify constraints and determine whether AI is the right solution. - Owning AI initiatives end-to-end, from stakeholder discovery and technical design through implementation, deployment, and iteration. - Designing, developing, and shipping AI-powered solutions quickly, delivering working prototypes in days, not months, with a focus on practical outcomes and measurable business value. - Improving organizational flow by building solutions that reduce bottlenecks, shorten lead times, and increase throughput. - Integrating AI capabilities into existing systems and workflows using APIs, orchestration tools, and modern AI platforms. - Partnering closely with stakeholders across functions to understand the real constraints and align on outcomes before jumping to solutions. - Defining and tracking success through business metrics, flow metrics, and feedback loops that make performance visible and actionable. - Contributing to technical direction by evaluating tools, documenting patterns, and creating reusable foundations that help the team scale its impact. WHAT YOU'LL NEED To succeed in this role, you'll need: - A genuine passion for technology, with a strong foundation in engineering fundamentals and a willingness to stay up-to-date with the latest advancements in AI and machine learning. - Competent and confident coding skills, with the ability to build working solutions end-to-end and write clean and maintainable code. - Strong proficiency in at least one modern scripting language (Python, JavaScript/TypeScript, or similar) and a solid understanding of REST APIs, GraphQL, and integration patterns. - Deep, practical experience with modern AI technologies, specifically prompt engineering, model selection, and cost-performance trade-offs.
