Research Engineer, Knowledge Team

ABOUT THE ROLE We are seeking a Research Engineer to contribute to the development of beneficial AI systems at Anthropic. Our mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems that are safe and beneficial for users and society. As a Research Engineer, you will play a critical role in designing and implementing new information architecture strategies for our language model, Claude. WHAT YOU'LL DO In this role, you will be responsible for designing and implementing new information architecture strategies, performing fine-tuning and reinforcement learning to teach language models how to interact with these architectures, building knowledge base eval sets to identify failure modes, and designing and evaluating advanced agentic search capabilities. WHAT YOU'LL NEED To be successful in this role, you will need to have: - A strong background in Python programming, with the ability to produce high-quality, reliable code that your teammates love using - Good machine learning research experience - Experience developing software that utilizes Large Language Models such as Claude - Results-oriented approach with a bias towards flexibility and impact - Ability to pick up slack and work collaboratively with the team - Excellent written and verbal communication skills - Experience collaborating with product teams to prototype and deliver innovative solutions - Experience building complex agentic systems that utilize LLMs - Experience developing scalable distributed information retrieval systems WHY REMOTE Anthropic offers a hybrid policy, requiring staff to spend at least 25% of their time in one of our offices. However, some roles may require more time in our offices. We are open to remote work arrangements and encourage applicants to apply even if they do not believe they meet every single qualification. BENEFITS Anthropic offers a competitive annual salary range of $350,000 - $850,000 USD, as well as visa sponsorship for eligible candidates. We also offer a range of benefits, including a minimum education requirement of a Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
