Principal Software Engineer I - Distributed Systems - Elasticsearch

ABOUT THE ROLE We are seeking a highly skilled Principal Software Engineer I to join our Elasticsearch - Distributed Systems team at Elastic. As a key member of this team, you will focus on improving the scale, performance, and resilience of Elasticsearch, a critical component of our Search AI Platform. This platform enables everyone to find the answers they need in real time, using all their data, at scale. WHAT YOU'LL DO As a Principal Software Engineer I, you will be responsible for designing and implementing solutions to improve the concurrent and consistent indexing of data across multiple machines in Elasticsearch. Your key responsibilities will include: - Improving Elasticsearch's components that support concurrent and consistent indexing across multiple machines - Maintaining our cluster coordination system to ensure high performance even in the presence of node additions and removals, while maintaining the safety and liveness properties of the system - Pushing the limits of Elasticsearch's scalability, including the number of shards, nodes, and petabytes it can handle - Investigating and resolving complex issues, including performance and concurrency problems - Collaborating with support engineers to resolve challenging problems WHAT YOU'LL NEED To be successful in this role, you will need: - A strong background in distributed systems and consensus algorithms - Strong skills in core Java, including the standard library of data structures and concurrency constructs - A deep technical proficiency in algorithms - Experience working on complex, highly distributed systems - Ability to build and debug features with a broad impact, running on multiple machines - Experience managing projects involving multiple engineers - Strong problem-solving skills and ability to work independently WHY REMOTE As a distributed company, Elastic values diversity and flexibility.
