Elastic
Principal Software Developer - Storage Engine - Elasticsearch
Job Description
ABOUT THE ROLE
Elastic is building the next generation of search and observability solutions that power more than half of the Fortune 500. As a Principal Software Developer on the Elasticsearch Storage Engine team, you will shape the core storage and query infrastructure that underpins our distributed search platform. Your work will directly influence how efficiently billions of documents are indexed, queried, and stored across global clusters, enabling customers to derive insights from data at unprecedented speed and scale.
You will collaborate with a globally distributed group of senior engineers, architects, and product managers to drive the technical vision for storage, indexing, and query execution. Your leadership will guide the evolution of key components such as serialization formats, index layouts, and resource management, ensuring that Elasticsearch remains the most performant and reliable search engine in the industry.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
- Lead the architectural design and evolution of core storage engine components, identifying and eliminating performance bottlenecks in indexing layouts, serialization, and resource utilization.
- Champion cross‑organizational initiatives that advance observability features, working closely with logs and metrics teams to deliver industry‑leading solutions.
- Mentor and advise engineers across the platform, providing deep technical expertise and fostering a culture of clean code, rigorous review, and incremental improvement.
- Drive operational excellence by establishing best practices for system observability, debugging, and performance tuning, and by translating complex system behaviors into clear, actionable insights.
- Own the end‑to‑end delivery of high‑quality Java code, ensuring that all contributions align with Elastic’s standards for scalability, reliability, and maintainability.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
- Proven experience designing and scaling high‑performance database or search engine systems, with a strong track record of delivering production‑grade solutions.
- Deep expertise in Java, including concurrency primitives, data structure design, and performance optimization for large‑scale distributed systems.
- Demonstrated ability to lead technical initiatives across multiple teams, making architecture decisions that balance short‑term delivery with long‑term sustainability.
- Hands‑on experience with storage technologies such as Elasticsearch, Solr, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, or Prometheus, and a solid understanding of their internals.
- Strong communication skills, able to articulate complex concepts to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders, and to collaborate effectively in a fully remote, asynchronous environment.
- A passion for leveraging AI and prompt engineering to accelerate development, debug complex systems, and validate results with sound judgment.
