ABOUT THE ROLE
We are seeking an experienced Manager, Software Engineering to lead a high-performing full-stack team at New Relic. As a key member of our global team of innovators and pioneers, you will play a critical role in shaping the future of observability and empowering companies to thrive in an AI-first world.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
As a Manager, Software Engineering, you will be responsible for leading a team of 6-8 engineers across backend (Java/Spring Boot) and frontend (React/TypeScript) technologies. Your key responsibilities will include:
- Leading end-to-end delivery, including sprint planning, execution, quality, and release
- Setting clear expectations, managing performance, and developing engineers at every level
- Partnering with Product Manager and XD to translate requirements into technically sound, deliverable plans
- Driving architectural discussions and holding the team to engineering excellence standards
- Identifying and removing blockers proactively and surfacing risks before they become incidents
- Building a culture of accountability, transparency, and continuous improvement
- Contributing to hiring, including owning interview loops and assessing technical and leadership fit
- Mentoring and growing engineers toward their next level and building a visible talent pipeline
- Operating in an agile, DevOps environment where the team owns what they ship
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
To be successful in this role, you will need:
- 10+ years of engineering experience with 2+ years of managing engineering teams
- Demonstrated experience managing senior individual contributors (P4/Staff level), including coaching, giving feedback, and holding the bar
- Strong technical foundation in backend systems, including Java/Spring Boot or equivalent, and the ability to engage credibly in architecture discussions
- Proven track record of delivering complex projects on time with high quality
- Experience with performance management, including setting expectations, coaching through gaps, documenting, and escalating when needed
- Ability to balance technical debt, feature delivery, and team health tradeoffs
- Strong communication skills, including direct, transparent, and effective communication with engineers and stakeholders alike
- Familiarity with modern engineering practices, including CI/CD, observability, and microservices
