Manager II, Engineering - Observability Pipelines

ABOUT THE ROLE Datadog is expanding its Observability Pipelines engineering organization, a core component of our on‑premise, vendor‑agnostic telemetry product. As Manager II, you will lead a distributed team of engineers across New York City and Paris, guiding the technical vision and scaling the team as the product matures. You will partner closely with product, data, and open‑source communities to shape the roadmap, drive architectural decisions, and ensure the pipeline remains reliable, high‑throughput, and adaptable to diverse customer environments. Your leadership will help position Observability Pipelines at the heart of Datadog’s data‑pipeline optimization strategy for both Logs and Metrics customers. WHAT YOU'LL DO You will manage a cross‑functional engineering group, setting technical direction and establishing operating rhythms that support rapid delivery and incident excellence. You will build and mentor a growing leadership layer, creating succession plans that enable the team to scale beyond your direct oversight. You will co‑own the product roadmap with product managers, translating business priorities into engineering initiatives that balance build‑vs‑buy decisions. You will define and evolve on‑call and incident standards, ensuring consistent response practices across the distributed team. You will cultivate key relationships with the SaaS Logs Pipelines team, the BYOC team, and the Vector open‑source community, aligning engineering efforts across product lines. Finally, you will coach managers and senior engineers, fostering a culture of continuous improvement, knowledge sharing, and high performance. WHAT YOU'LL NEED You have proven experience managing managers and distributed engineering teams, raising operational standards and driving measurable improvements in delivery and quality. Your background in distributed systems and high‑throughput data infrastructure enables you to guide architectural decisions and assess trade‑offs at the domain level. You understand the complexities of on‑premises or customer‑installed software, including support escalation, incident diagnosis, and environment heterogeneity. You are a strategic partner to product, shaping the roadmap and ensuring engineering decisions align with business outcomes. Commercial awareness and an understanding of the competitive landscape are essential. Experience with high‑performance or Rust‑based data pipeline systems is a strong advantage. You possess strong communication skills, the ability to influence cross‑functional stakeholders, and a passion for building inclusive, high‑performing teams.
