Machine Learning Fellow - Human Frontier Collective (US)

ABOUT THE ROLE Scale AI is inviting a Machine Learning Fellow to join the Human Frontier Collective (HFC), a global network of researchers and domain experts focused on advancing responsible AI. In this fellowship you will collaborate with leading AI labs, evaluate and refine cutting‑edge generative models, and contribute to high‑impact research that informs Scale’s product suite. The role is fully remote, 1099, and spans an initial six‑month engagement with the possibility of extension based on project outcomes and mutual fit. WHAT YOU'LL DO You will design, review, and optimize PyTorch and TensorFlow models that underpin Scale’s data‑labeling and model‑validation pipelines, ensuring they meet performance, scalability, and correctness standards. You will evaluate complex ML code and AI‑generated implementations, advising on GPU utilization, memory efficiency, and deployment trade‑offs across AWS infrastructure. You will collaborate with Scale’s research team to co‑author technical reports and peer‑review papers, thereby raising the visibility of both your work and the HFC community. You will participate in interdisciplinary workshops, contributing insights that shape the future of AI governance and application. Finally, you will mentor junior researchers and share best practices through internal knowledge‑sharing sessions. WHAT YOU'LL NEED You hold a PhD or postdoctoral degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field, and possess 1–3 years of professional experience as a Machine Learning Engineer or Data Scientist. You are proficient in Python and modern ML frameworks such as PyTorch and TensorFlow, and you have hands‑on experience with cloud services, particularly AWS, as well as MLOps tooling including Docker and Langchain. You demonstrate a detail‑oriented, innovative mindset, with a passion for applied AI research and a commitment to collaborative problem solving. Strong written and verbal communication skills enable you to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non‑technical audiences. You are self‑motivated, able to thrive in an asynchronous environment, and comfortable managing a flexible workload of 10–40 hours per week.
