Job Description

ABOUT THE ROLE Scale AI is inviting a Machine Learning Fellow to join the Human Frontier Collective (HFC) in the United Kingdom. The fellowship is a six‑month, fully remote engagement that may extend based on project outcomes. Fellows will work alongside leading researchers and industry partners to shape the next generation of generative AI systems. The role sits at the intersection of research, engineering, and real‑world application, offering a unique opportunity to influence AI systems that support critical decisions across sectors such as healthcare, finance, and public policy. WHAT YOU'LL DO You will design, review, and optimize PyTorch and TensorFlow models for large‑scale deployment, ensuring efficiency, correctness, and scalability. You will evaluate complex ML code and AI‑generated implementations, providing actionable recommendations for GPU utilization and infrastructure trade‑offs. You will collaborate closely with Scale’s research team to co‑author technical reports and peer‑reviewed papers, contributing to high‑impact publications such as SciPredict, PropensityBench, and the Professional Reasoning Benchmark. You will participate in the HFC community, sharing insights, attending interdisciplinary workshops, and mentoring junior researchers. You will also help shape best practices for MLOps pipelines, leveraging Docker, Langchain, and AWS services to accelerate experimentation and production readiness. WHAT YOU'LL NEED A PhD or post‑doctoral degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or a closely related field is required. You should have 1‑3+ years of professional experience as a Machine Learning Engineer or Data Scientist, with a proven track record of deploying models in production environments. Mastery of Python and modern ML frameworks such as PyTorch and TensorFlow is essential, along with experience in cloud infrastructure (AWS) and MLOps tooling (Docker, Langchain). You must be a detail‑oriented, innovative thinker who excels at translating research insights into robust engineering solutions. Strong written and verbal communication skills are necessary for collaborating with cross‑functional teams and for authoring research manuscripts. A passion for applied AI research and a commitment to responsible, human‑centered AI practices are critical. WHY REMOTE The fellowship is fully remote, allowing you to work from any location within the UK while maintaining a flexible schedule that supports work‑life balance. Scale AI’s distributed culture emphasizes asynchronous collaboration, enabling you to contribute effectively across time zones without the constraints of a traditional office. The remote setup provides the freedom to design your workspace, schedule your hours, and focus on high‑impact work without commuting distractions. BENEFITS Although the fellowship is a 1099 independent contractor engagement, Scale AI offers a competitive stipend that includes a remote work allowance, a learning and development budget, and access to industry‑leading health coverage options. You will receive paid time off aligned with contract duration and the opportunity to extend your engagement based on project success. The fellowship also provides access to Scale’s internal tools, datasets, and a global network of researchers, ensuring you have the resources to advance your career and contribute to transformative AI solutions.
