Job Description

ABOUT THE ROLE The Intermediate Backend Engineer - Analytics Instrumentation role is part of the Data Engineering and Monetization group at GitLab, focused on collecting Product Usage and Billing event data. This team builds data collection platforms that enable product teams to assess user behavior and make evidence-based choices through privacy-conscious instrumentation. WHAT YOU'LL DO As an Intermediate Backend Engineer, you will contribute to the design and development of a unified data infrastructure platform that consolidates analytics instrumentation across GitLab's engineering organization. Your key responsibilities will include building and maintaining backend systems that give the company visibility into customer usage patterns across GitLab SaaS and Self-Managed deployment environments. You will help build and maintain a unified data collection platform using Golang, Kubernetes, ClickHouse, and NATS, with success measured by reliability, performance, and adoption across GitLab teams. Additionally, you will support usage billing and instrumentation systems during working hours, work across the organization with research and development teams and the enterprise data organization to deliver common solutions, and contribute to technical choices that balance ease of use for product teams with reliability and correctness for data consumers. WHAT YOU'LL NEED To be successful in this role, you will need experience working with platform or infrastructure systems in production environments. You should be proficient in the Go programming language, with experience building and maintaining production services. You will also need backend development experience, with the ability to contribute to scalable, reliable systems serving internal and external customers. Familiarity with infrastructure concerns such as system reliability, performance at scale, data quality, and observability is also essential. Experience working in cross-functional teams with product teams, data consumers, and other internal stakeholders across team boundaries, as well as familiarity with cloud native technologies and open source development practices, will be beneficial. WHY REMOTE As a distributed team of generalist engineers, we collaborate transparently across teams, delivering measurable results through efficient iteration while building inclusive solutions that respect user privacy. Our work enables data-driven decision making and data-informed planning across the organization. BENEFITS As a member of the GitLab team, you will receive a competitive salary, comprehensive health insurance, and a generous parental leave policy. You will also have access to a flexible schedule, education stipend, and a range of other benefits that support your career growth and well-being.
