Engineering Manager, Research Tools

ABOUT THE ROLE Anthropic is a pioneering AI safety and research company working to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We are seeking an experienced manager to lead our Research Tools team, which builds systems that support large-scale, distributed fine-tuning runs and improve the productivity of researchers. As a manager on this team, you will support a group of machine learning and distributed systems experts to make these systems and tools highly efficient, facilitate fast iteration on model development and research, and evolve the infrastructure continuously to incorporate new research advances. Our Research Tooling sits at the intersection of almost every technical group at Anthropic, requiring strong collaboration with research teams, product teams, and infrastructure teams. WHAT YOU'LL DO As a manager on the Research Tools team, your primary responsibilities will include: - Prioritizing the team's work in collaboration with the technical lead, research teams, and product teams to support fast iteration on research projects and training runs. - Designing processes that help the team operate effectively, such as postmortem review, incident response, and on-call rotations. - Coaching and supporting your reports to understand and pursue their professional growth. - Running the team's recruiting efforts efficiently to ensure we can grow as quickly as we need through a period of rapid growth. WHAT YOU'LL NEED To be successful in this role, you should have: - At least 2 years of experience as a manager and actively enjoy people management. - A quick study with the ability to understand complex technical systems at a high level. - Experience working with research teams, especially as part of a "research to production" pipeline. - Strong people management experience, including coaching, performance evaluation, mentorship, and career development. - Strong project management skills, including prioritization, communicating across team and organizational boundaries. - Experience recruiting for your team, including predicting staffing needs, designing interview loops, evaluating candidates, and closing them. WHY REMOTE Anthropic offers a hybrid policy, requiring staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time. However, some roles may require more time in our offices. We are committed to providing a flexible work environment that allows our team members to thrive. BENEFITS Anthropic offers a competitive annual salary range of $150,000 - $300,000 USD. We also provide a range of benefits, including visa sponsorship, a minimum education requirement of a Bachelor's degree or an equivalent combination of education, training, and/or experience, and a location-based hybrid policy.
