Engineering Manager, Payments
Job Description
ABOUT THE ROLE
Airbnb is building the world’s most trusted marketplace for travel experiences, and our Payments team is the backbone that powers every transaction across the platform. As Engineering Manager, Payments, you will lead a high‑performing group of software engineers who design, build, and operate the payment infrastructure that supports millions of hosts and guests worldwide. You will work closely with product, data science, and security teams to deliver reliable, scalable, and compliant payment solutions that enable seamless booking experiences and protect the integrity of our marketplace.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
You will recruit, mentor, and grow a diverse team of engineers, ensuring they are empowered to deliver high‑quality code, rigorous testing, and continuous improvement. You will own the end‑to‑end delivery of new payment features, from concept through launch, coordinating cross‑functional stakeholders and setting clear, measurable goals. You will drive architectural decisions that balance performance, resilience, and cost, and champion best practices in CI/CD, observability, and automated testing. You will analyze system metrics and user feedback to identify bottlenecks and opportunities for optimization, and you will lead incident response and post‑mortem processes to strengthen reliability. Finally, you will foster a culture of collaboration, inclusion, and learning, encouraging experimentation and knowledge sharing across the Payments organization.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
A proven track record of leading engineering teams in a fast‑moving, high‑scale environment, ideally within fintech, payments, or e‑commerce. You have deep experience with distributed systems, microservices, and cloud platforms (AWS, GCP, or Azure) and are comfortable designing for high availability and low latency. Strong knowledge of payment protocols, fraud detection, and regulatory compliance (PCI, PSD2, etc.) is essential. You possess excellent communication skills, able to articulate complex technical concepts to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders. You are data‑driven, using metrics to guide decisions, and you thrive in a culture that values experimentation, ownership, and continuous improvement.
WHY REMOTE
Airbnb’s remote culture is built on trust, flexibility, and asynchronous collaboration. Teams across the globe operate on a shared set of core values and clear communication practices that allow you to work on your own schedule while staying connected with colleagues via video, chat, and shared documentation. Remote work empowers you to balance personal and professional commitments, reduces commuting time, and expands your ability to attract top talent from around the world. Our distributed teams enjoy a supportive environment that encourages autonomy, accountability, and a healthy work‑life balance.
BENEFITS
Competitive salary and equity package. Comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage for you and your dependents. Generous paid time off, parental leave, and flexible holiday policies. A remote working stipend to support home office setup and internet. Dedicated learning budget and access to industry conferences, courses, and internal knowledge sharing. Robust retirement plan with company match. And a culture that celebrates diversity, inclusion, and personal growth.
