Engineering Manager, Data Foundations

ABOUT THE ROLE As Engineering Manager for Data Foundations at GitLab, you will lead and grow a high-performing engineering team responsible for developing a core data platform that ingests, processes, persists, and queries data streams generated across GitLab. This role requires a leader who can leverage AI to drive non-linear productivity gains across the platform, accelerating our ability to deliver value to our customers. WHAT YOU'LL DO As Engineering Manager, you will be responsible for managing and enabling a high-performing Data Insights Platform engineering team, creating an environment where team members can do their best work and deliver strong results. Your key responsibilities will include: - Hiring, managing, and developing engineers to achieve team goals - Partnering with product managers, product designers, and peer engineering managers to define and deliver the roadmap for Data Insights Platform and related Platform Insights initiatives - Owning delivery for your team, including planning, prioritization, execution, and operational follow-through across architecture work, platform improvements, and production readiness - Guiding the technical design of distributed data-path components, including ingestion, buffering, enrichment, exporting, and querying - Shaping architecture choices on sharding, partitioning, component-specific scaling, failure recovery, and tenant isolation across SaaS, Dedicated, self-managed, and Cells deployments - Driving a high bar for security, privacy, and governance in how platform data is handled - Improving operational maturity across the platform, including observability, metrics, logging, readiness, capacity planning, performance monitoring, and clear runbooks for managed environments WHAT YOU'LL NEED To be successful in this role, you will need to have: - Deep distributed systems knowledge, including architecture of high-throughput, multi-component data systems - Experience with AI and its application in driving non-linear productivity gains - Strong leadership and management skills, including hiring, coaching, and developing engineers - Ability to partner closely with product managers, product designers, and peer engineering managers to define and deliver the roadmap for Data Insights Platform and related Platform Insights initiatives - Strong technical design skills, including the ability to guide the technical design of distributed data-path components - Experience with security, privacy, and governance in how platform data is handled - Ability to improve operational maturity across the platform, including observability, metrics, logging, readiness, capacity planning, performance monitoring, and clear runbooks for managed environments WHY REMOTE At GitLab, we value flexibility and autonomy, and we are committed to providing a remote-friendly work environment.
