Engineering Manager, Cell Infrastructure

ABOUT THE ROLE We're seeking an experienced leader to join our Platform Scale & Architecture team as a Manager / Senior Manager, Cell Infrastructure. As a key member of our team, you'll play a critical role in shaping the foundation that enables GitLab to run reliably across multiple cloud providers. Your expertise will help us build a control layer that determines how GitLab cells are provisioned, placed, and operated across clouds, supporting strong reliability, cost efficiency, and scalability. WHAT YOU'LL DO As a Manager / Senior Manager, Cell Infrastructure, you'll be responsible for leading the design and delivery of multi-cloud cell placement and orchestration systems. You'll build and grow the engineering team responsible for cell infrastructure, drive infrastructure cost visibility and optimization, and own the reliability model for cell infrastructure. Additionally, you'll partner with adjacent teams to support their scaling and deployment needs, define and evolve architectural decisions, and develop platform capabilities and developer tooling. WHAT YOU'LL NEED To be successful in this role, you'll need hands-on experience designing, building, and operating distributed systems in production using cell-based architecture. You should have operational ownership of highly reliable systems, including experience with on-call, incident management, and site reliability engineering practices. A strong knowledge of distributed systems fundamentals, experience leading engineering teams, and ability to hire, support, and develop engineers are also essential. You'll also need to be comfortable working in ambiguity and helping define direction in an early-stage build.
