Engineering Director, Core
Job Description
ABOUT THE ROLE
As Director of Engineering at LaunchDarkly, you will lead the teams behind our core platform, the infrastructure our customers rely on for every deployment. You will set technical direction across multiple engineering teams, grow a strong bench of managers and senior engineers, and ensure the systems in our critical path remain fast, reliable, and ready to scale. We prefer this role to be based in the US, with any time zone acceptable.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
As Director of Engineering, you will be responsible for:
Setting a clear and credible technical roadmap for your teams and communicating it throughout the organization
Managing and growing a group of engineering managers and senior engineers, including hiring, coaching, and retaining strong technical talent
Driving complex, multi-team initiatives from design through delivery, including large migrations and infrastructure evolution
Owning reliability and performance for systems in the critical path for customers, with a focus on on-call, incident response, and observability
Working closely with product, design, and other engineering leaders to align technical direction with business priorities
Bringing emerging tools and AI-assisted development into your team's day-to-day to increase leverage
Building a high-trust, high-agency engineering culture and acting as a mentor and multiplier across the organization
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
To succeed in this role, you will need:
Experience as an engineering leader, managing multiple teams and growing technical leaders under your guidance
A deep technical background, with real hands-on experience as a software engineer in distributed systems, high-scale infrastructure, or developer tools
Comfort with ambiguity and the ability to set direction in a fast-changing environment
Strong communication skills, with the ability to translate technical tradeoffs into terms that product, business, and executive stakeholders can act on
A bias toward action and a track record of delivering complex technical projects end to end

BENEFITS
Target pay ranges based on Geographic Zones for Level M4 are as follows:
Zone 1: San Francisco/Bay Area or New York City Metropolitan Area: $269,400 - $370,480
Zone 2: Boston, DC, Irvine, LA, Monterey, Santa Barbara, Santa Rosa, Seattle: $242,500 - $333,410
Zone 3: All other US locations: $229,000 - $314,930
