Engineer Officer

ABOUT THE ROLE Engineer Officers serve in the Royal Canadian Engineers, a core component of the Canadian Armed Forces’ Combat Arms. Their mission is to ensure combat readiness by building and maintaining infrastructure, clearing obstacles, and managing explosives in support of Army operations both within Canada and abroad. WHAT YOU'LL DO You will construct habitable camps, build bridges and ferries, and create combat roads. Your responsibilities include breaching minefields, disposing of explosives, and demolishing or protecting roads and bridges as required. You will lead engineering units in diverse environments—from Arctic tundra to tropical jungle, desert, mountains, and urban settings—adapting tactics to each terrain and climate. WHAT YOU'LL NEED A university degree is required; the Canadian Armed Forces will assess whether your academic background aligns with the role. Successful candidates enter a structured training pathway that begins with 12 weeks of basic officer training at the Canadian Forces Leadership and Recruit School, covering military knowledge, leadership, weapons handling, first aid, and physical fitness. Subsequent training includes second‑language instruction (2–9 months) and advanced courses at the Infantry School and the Canadian Forces School of Military Engineering. You must complete a comprehensive field deployment to demonstrate leadership of a troop and proficiency in engineering tasks such as bridge building, minefield construction, and obstacle breaching. Physical fitness, adaptability, and a commitment to continuous learning are essential. While the role is not a traditional remote job, it provides opportunities to work in varied global environments and to develop specialized skills through formal courses and on‑the‑job training after initial tours.
