Gitlab
Backend Engineer, Source Code Experience (Ruby)
Job Description
ABOUT THE ROLE
We're seeking a talented Backend Engineer to join our Source Code Experience team within GitLab's Create stage. As a key member of this team, you'll play a crucial role in making everyday source code workflows clear, reliable, and efficient for users working across GitLab projects. With the increasing use of artificial intelligence agents, you'll build backend capabilities and interfaces that support trustworthy collaboration between people and agents.
WHAT YOU'LL DO
As a Backend Engineer on our Source Code Experience team, you'll be responsible for developing secure, well-tested, and performant features and improvements using Ruby and GraphQL. You'll work through complex requirements and legacy constraints to deliver clear solutions while protecting the reliability of this critical system. Your tasks will include designing and maintaining backend services, application programming interfaces, data models, and business logic that support intuitive source code workflows.
You'll collaborate across functions and teams, both asynchronously and synchronously, and involve domain experts when their input will improve the outcome. You'll also use artificial intelligence agents for well-scoped work when they can speed up delivery without sacrificing quality, and critically review their output. Additionally, you'll write maintainable code that follows GitLab's standards and contribute to constructive code reviews.
WHAT YOU'LL NEED
To succeed in this role, you'll need professional experience building backend web applications, services, or application programming interfaces, with experience using Ruby and GraphQL. You'll also need an understanding of relational databases, structured query language, data modeling, caching, background processing, and backend performance practices. Experience contributing to user-facing workflows and maintaining their underlying systems is also essential.
You'll be expected to write backend unit and integration tests, with familiarity with the testing pyramid, Git, and collaborative code review processes. Experience using artificial intelligence coding agents and reviewing their output, or an interest in building these skills in a complex monorepo, is also desirable. Clear written and spoken English communication skills are necessary, including sharing useful status updates in a remote, asynchronous environment.
WHY REMOTE
As a remote employee, you'll have the flexibility to work from anywhere and enjoy a better work-life balance. You'll be part of a global team that values diversity, inclusion, and collaboration.
BENEFITS
GitLab offers a comprehensive benefits package, including health insurance, financial support, and a generous education stipend. We also provide a flexible schedule, allowing you to work at times that suit you best. Additionally, we offer a competitive salary and opportunities for professional growth and development.
