Job Description

ABOUT THE ROLE GitLab is building the next generation of developer experience through intelligent orchestration of DevSecOps. As a Backend Engineer on the Chat Engine team you will help create GitLab Duo Chat, the conversational AI experience that lives inside the GitLab platform. You will design, implement, and maintain the agentic runtime that powers the flow registry, LangGraph flows, and the Duo Workflow Service, while integrating those capabilities with the GitLab Rails monolith and its GraphQL API. Your work will directly influence how millions of users interact with GitLab, improving productivity, security, and operational efficiency at scale. WHAT YOU'LL DO You will develop secure, well‑tested, and performant features for GitLab Duo Chat, ensuring reliability in a high‑scale environment. You will extend agentic flows in Python using LangGraph, registering them through the Flow Registry and serving them via the Duo Workflow Service. You will integrate chat capabilities with the GitLab Rails monolith, exposing functionality through GraphQL and ensuring seamless user experience. You will write maintainable code that meets internal standards, including comprehensive tests for every merge request, and you will actively review code from external contributors. You will identify technical debt, propose improvements, and collaborate with Product, UX, and Frontend teams to enhance product quality, security, and performance. You will participate in on‑call rotations to troubleshoot production incidents and support the stability of the AI features. WHAT YOU'LL NEED You have professional experience building and testing production services in Python, with a strong focus on clean architecture and performance. You possess working proficiency in Ruby on Rails or a demonstrated willingness to learn it, as a significant portion of Chat lives in the GitLab monolith. You are familiar with large language models, including prompting, tool or function calling, evaluation, and managing non‑deterministic behavior. You have designed and built APIs, diagnosed performance bottlenecks, and integrated well‑documented third‑party services. You follow secure coding guidelines from the outset and communicate technical problems and solutions clearly in written form. You manage work independently, prioritize effectively, and seek help when needed. You have experience with LangGraph, LangChain, or a comparable agent orchestration framework, and you are comfortable with GraphQL and RSpec. You have used the GitLab product as a user or contributor and have worked on a globally distributed remote team. WHY REMOTE GitLab’s culture is built around asynchronous collaboration, allowing teams to work across time zones without sacrificing productivity. Remote work is supported by robust tooling, clear communication protocols, and a flexible schedule that respects individual work rhythms. Employees can focus on deep work during their preferred hours while still participating in real‑time discussions and code reviews when necessary. The distributed model fosters diverse perspectives, accelerates learning, and enables rapid iteration on complex AI challenges. BENEFITS Competitive salary and equity; comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage; generous paid time off and holiday schedule; remote work stipend; unlimited learning and development budget; access to cutting‑edge AI research resources; inclusive culture and employee resource groups; and participation in global tech conferences and events.
