Associate Software Engineer - Java (Distributed Systems and Databases)

ABOUT THE ROLE New Relic’s Telemetry Data Platform group builds the foundation for all of the company’s products, handling data ingest, storage, and query. As an Associate Software Engineer – Java (Distributed Systems and Databases) you will work on NRDB, the proprietary telemetry database that powers New Relic’s observability platform. You will own code from design through production, participate in pager rotation, and help keep the system reliable while adding new features. WHAT YOU’LL DO You will design and implement new features with a focus on performance and efficiency. You will collaborate with teammates to build scalable solutions that improve application performance and reliability. You will also identify opportunities to enhance system stability and respond to incidents as part of the on‑call rotation. WHAT YOU’LL NEED You must have at least two years of professional experience building distributed SaaS software. Proficiency in Java, strong knowledge of algorithms and data structures, and experience building high‑throughput systems are essential. A deep understanding of distributed systems and their core challenges is required. You should be comfortable using the command line to troubleshoot and fix issues. Experience with relational and NoSQL databases such as MySQL, Postgres, DynamoDB, Redis, and MongoDB is necessary. Familiarity with public cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP), containerization (Kubernetes or Docker), and solid computer science fundamentals are also required. BONUS POINTS Experience with network load balancing and low‑latency, high‑throughput distributed systems. Knowledge of modern observability and alerting patterns. Ability to debug with tools like Java Flight Recorder. Experience working in distributed teams across time zones and a proven ability to work asynchronously. BENEFITS The estimated base pay range is $98,000 to $123,000 USD, with eligibility for a corporate bonus plan.
