Job Description

ABOUT THE ROLE We are seeking an experienced Accountant to join our Financial Services team at the City of Greater Sudbury. This is a permanent position that offers the opportunity to work remotely on a full-time basis, with the requirement to report to a City of Greater Sudbury work location on short notice. The successful candidate will be responsible for performing accounting and ERP functions to maintain the general ledger and revenue and expenditure statements for all City funds. WHAT YOU'LL DO As an Accountant, your main functions will include: - Preparing detailed analyses, month-end reconciliations, and record journal entries for general ledger accounts, and resolving unusual or long-standing reconciling items - Preparing year-end working papers and completing Financial Information Return (FIR) schedules as required - Reconciling and submitting revenue confirmation requests to organizations, provincial ministries, and federal agencies that provide funding to the City - Depositing various payments to appropriate accounts - Recommending revisions to accounting business processes and internal control procedures, and implementing same when approved - Providing technical support to bookkeepers, analysts, Customer Service Clerks, and operating departments - Maintaining a log of numerical sequence of Accounts Payable cheques and ensuring that all cheque numbers are accounted for - Balancing inventory and overseeing periodic verification - Training petty cash custodians for set-up and closure of petty cash funds, as required, and conducting periodic inspections of petty cash boxes to ensure security is maintained - Maintaining the City's chart of accounts by establishing new accounts and inactivating old ones - Maintaining PeopleSoft trees for purposes of financial reporting and budgeting - Reviewing process scheduler results and troubleshooting any system issues (ledger and sub-ledger postings) - Running maintenance utilities for BI, AR, AP, payroll, and conversion journal postings to the general ledger - Preparing and assisting with financial, statistical, and economic studies and reports, and financial policy, as required - Relieving Senior Accountant during periods of vacation or absence - Responding to section-specific inquiries from City staff - Developing and maintaining a thorough working knowledge of the City's Safety Manual and applicable Provincial Legislation - Performing other related duties as required WHAT YOU'LL NEED To be successful in this role, you will need: - A Community College diploma in a related discipline, such as Accounting, Business Administration, or a related program - Enrolment in a University and accounting designation program considered an asset - Over two and one-half (2½) to five (5) years of related accounting experience - Knowledge of Public Sector Accounting Standards and municipal finance function - Knowledge of applicable legislation and related regulations - Knowledge of Enterprise Resource Planning software and PeopleSoft Financials an asset - Knowledge of accounting and internal control systems with particular knowledge in municipal finance - Knowledge of applicable City policies and procedures - Ability to accurately evaluate and analyze accounting data, identify accounting issues, and provide appropriate solutions - Ability to plan, organize, and prioritize tasks with attention to detailed work - Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise good judgment and discretion in dealing with confidential information - Ability to develop, recommend, and implement new accounting business processes and internal controls -
