Job Description

ABOUT THE ROLE The Human Frontier Collective Fellowship at Scale AI invites leading STEM scholars to shape the next generation of generative AI systems. As a STEM Fellow you will partner with Scale’s research laboratories and industry collaborators to design, evaluate, and refine AI models that drive high‑impact decision‑making across science, medicine, and policy. The role is fully remote, structured as a six‑month independent contractor engagement with the possibility of extension, and is tailored for researchers who thrive in a distributed, interdisciplinary environment. WHAT YOU'LL DO You will collaborate with Scale’s AI teams and external partners to craft domain‑specific evaluation problems and curated datasets that test model robustness, fairness, and reasoning. You will conduct rigorous experiments, analyze results, and translate findings into actionable insights that improve model performance. You will co‑author technical reports and peer‑reviewed papers, contributing to flagship publications such as SciPredict, PropensityBench, and Professional Reasoning Benchmark. You will participate in the HFC community, attending virtual workshops, presenting your work at global conferences, and mentoring junior researchers. You will also advise on research priorities, ensuring that the fellowship’s output aligns with Scale’s mission to build reliable AI for critical decisions. WHAT YOU'LL NEED You hold a PhD, postdoctoral position, or faculty appointment in a STEM discipline—Computer Science, Machine Learning, Physics, Biology, Chemistry, Mathematics, or related fields—with demonstrable expertise in applied AI research. You have a track record of publishing in top venues and experience designing large‑scale data pipelines or benchmark suites. You are detail‑oriented, an innovative problem‑solver, and comfortable working asynchronously across time zones. Strong communication skills are essential for translating complex technical results to both technical and non‑technical audiences. You are authorized to work in your country of residence and are comfortable operating as an independent contractor. WHY REMOTE Scale AI champions a distributed, asynchronous culture that empowers researchers to balance professional commitments with personal life. The fellowship offers a flexible 10–40 hour workweek, allowing you to structure your schedule around research deadlines, teaching responsibilities, or family needs. You will collaborate with a global network of academics and industry leaders, gaining exposure to cutting‑edge projects while maintaining the autonomy of a remote setting. The remote model also supports a diverse, inclusive community where expertise is the primary currency, not geographic location. BENEFITS The fellowship provides a competitive stipend commensurate with the scope and complexity of assigned projects, along with a dedicated remote‑work allowance for home‑office equipment. A learning budget is available for conferences, courses, and research tools to support your professional growth. You will receive access to Scale’s internal research resources, mentorship from senior scientists, and opportunities to publish in high‑visibility outlets. While health coverage is not offered to independent contractors, the fellowship includes paid time off for rest and rejuvenation, and you will be invited to participate in virtual wellness and networking events that foster community and collaboration.
