Job Description

ABOUT THE ROLE Scale AI is launching the Human Frontier Collective Fellowship to bring medical experts into the forefront of generative AI research. As a Medical Fellow, you will serve as a clinical advisor on high‑impact projects that shape the safety, accuracy, and reasoning of advanced AI systems. Your insights will inform the design of realistic medical scenarios, the evaluation of model outputs, and the development of ethical guidelines that guide AI deployment in healthcare settings. The fellowship is a fully remote, 1099 independent contractor engagement lasting approximately six months, with the possibility of extension based on project needs and performance. WHAT YOU'LL DO You will design complex clinical case studies that test AI decision‑making across a range of specialties, including internal medicine, emergency medicine, radiology, surgery, and psychiatry. You will evaluate model predictions for safety and accuracy, providing structured, example‑driven feedback that refines reasoning frameworks. You will collaborate closely with Scale’s research team to co‑author technical reports and peer‑review papers, contributing to publications such as SciPredict, PropensityBench, and the Professional Reasoning Benchmark. You will participate in the HFC community, engaging with interdisciplinary scholars to discuss best practices and emerging challenges in medical AI. You will manage a flexible schedule of 10–40 hours per week, coordinating deliverables asynchronously with global partners. Your work will directly influence the design of AI tools that support clinicians and improve patient outcomes. WHAT YOU'LL NEED A medical degree (MD or DO) with board certification is required; residents, practicing clinicians, and those with extensive clinical experience are welcome. You must possess strong clinical reasoning and written communication skills, with the ability to assess nuanced or edge‑case scenarios. Detail orientation, innovative thinking, and a collaborative mindset are essential. Prior exposure to AI concepts is a plus but not mandatory. You must be authorized to work in the United States and able to commit to the fellowship duration. Familiarity with research methodology and experience in academic publishing will enhance your candidacy. WHY REMOTE The fellowship is designed for professionals who balance clinical responsibilities with research interests. Working remotely allows you to integrate fellowship tasks into your existing schedule, whether you are in a hospital setting, a private practice, or another clinical environment. The asynchronous culture at Scale ensures that you can contribute at times that suit your day‑to‑day commitments, while still engaging with a global network of experts through virtual meetings, shared documents, and collaborative platforms. This flexibility supports a healthy work‑life balance and enables you to pursue the fellowship without relocating or disrupting your primary clinical duties. BENEFITS Contractors receive a competitive hourly rate commensurate with project scope and expertise. Scale provides a remote stipend to support home‑office setup and internet expenses. Eligible contractors can access a learning budget for courses, conferences, or certifications that enhance their AI and clinical knowledge. Health coverage options are available for contractors who qualify under the company’s benefits program. Paid time off is granted on a pro‑rated basis,
