ABOUT THE ROLE Scale AI invites a Medical Fellow to join the Human Frontier Collective (HFC) Fellowship, a six‑month, fully remote independent contractor engagement that may extend based on project impact. The Fellow will bring clinical expertise to the forefront of AI research, collaborating with Scale’s research team and partner labs to design, evaluate, and refine generative AI systems that support high‑stakes medical decision‑making. In this role, you will help shape the safety, accuracy, and interpretability of AI models that will ultimately influence patient care and health policy worldwide. WHAT YOU'LL DO - Design and implement complex clinical scenarios for model testing, ensuring realistic representation of edge‑case medical conditions. - Evaluate AI decision‑making across safety, accuracy, and bias metrics, providing structured, example‑driven feedback that informs model improvement. - Collaborate with interdisciplinary researchers to develop reasoning frameworks that enhance model interpretability. - Co‑author technical reports and research papers for Scale’s public research portfolio, contributing to high‑impact publications such as SciPredict, PropensityBench, and Professional Reasoning Benchmark. - Participate in the HFC community, engaging in peer review, workshops, and knowledge sharing with leading clinicians and AI experts globally. - Maintain rigorous documentation of evaluation protocols, findings, and recommendations to support reproducibility and regulatory compliance. WHAT YOU'LL NEED - Medical degree (MD, DO) with board certification or equivalent clinical experience; residents, practicing clinicians, and experienced healthcare professionals are welcome. - Specialties in internal medicine, emergency medicine, radiology, surgery, psychiatry, or related fields. - Demonstrated excellence in clinical reasoning, analytical thinking, and technical writing. - Strong attention to detail and the ability to assess nuanced, high‑stakes scenarios. - Experience in research or data‑driven projects is a plus; prior exposure to AI concepts is not required but valued. - Excellent communication skills, capable of translating complex medical insights into clear, actionable guidance for data scientists and engineers.
